Chapter 1 Lesson 3 Revelation

The Relationship Between Faith and Reason A supernatural gift from God A rational act It “feeds” or fulfills reason Only in faith can reason be fulfilled Reason: A natural faculty of the intellect A part of the rational soul Call us to understand the world around us To categorize To explore To demonstrate concepts To seek God

Turn to page 15 in your textbook. Revelation means to “reveal” or to remove the veil. It is God’s way of communicating himself and his truths to man.

How has God revealed himself to us? Creation: it demonstrates God’s existence and his attributes His written word: Sacred Scripture – the Old and New Testament His word made flesh: the Incarnation – the Divine Person of Jesus Christ

The Magisterium The teaching office of the Church The Pope, the bishops in union with him. It passes on the fullness of truth and to safeguard it from error. It is guided by the Holy Spirit

Faith It is the supernatural gift that allows us to believe in God and his revelation It involves a rational assent of the will It is a decision

Our Need for Revelation What is faith? Faith is the gift of god whereby man assents to and believes in God and the truths he has revealed. How can we come to know more about the mysteries of God? We can know more about the mysteries of God by believing what he has revealed. How does Revelation perfect our knowledge of God? Revelation perfects our knowledge of God by revealing things about him that we cannot know by reason alone. How do faith and reason work together? Faith allows reason to believe things God has revealed: reason can help us to understand what we believe and why we believe it. How does God reveal himself to us? Scripture, Sacred Tradition, Jesus, etc. What have we learned about God from revelation? He sent the Holy Spirit to guide us. Therefore, we have the whole Trinity to help us reach heaven to be with Jesus.
