Purpose of HOF9 To discuss important management and development issues pertaining to coastal and oceanic fisheries, consistent with national priorities and aspirations. Participants encouraged to provide comments and guidance of FAME’s 2015/2016 annual work plans and comments on 2013/2014 implemented work plans

Coastal Fisheries Programme Why it matters? Represents almost the only opportunity limited prospects for livestock development in small PICTs, coastal fisheries is the only opportunity Supports Nutrition and Food Security Coastal fisheries provides 50% - 90% of protein intake for coastal communities. Supports continuing community livelihoods Provides around 50% of coastal households with 1st or 2nd source of income Provides opportunity for community economic growth Estimated catch volume is ~155,000 mt with an estimated value of USD320-500 million Provide most of the non-imported food/nutrition supplies to local communities, thus have positive impact on reducing NCDs

Oceanic Fisheries Programme Why it matters? The fishery is not just big - it is huge 2.5 Million tons for Western Pacific – 60% of global tuna supply. Half of that is from EEZs Landed value of over USD6 billion – US$3 billion from fish taken in EEZs USD 150 million from foreign fishing licences to countries Locally operating fleets contributed USD 300 million contribution to GDP ~ 15,000 direct jobs in harvesting and processing
