THERMAL ENERGY TRANSFER NOTES. THERMAL ENERGY Total amount of energy in an object’s moving molecules. Heat--flow of thermal energy from a warmer object.
Heat Transfer Thermal energy Temperature is the average amount of energy of motion of each particle of a substance. Thermal energy is the total energy.
Potential and Kinetic Energy How is all energy divided? Potential Energy Kinetic Energy All Energy Gravitation Potential Energy Elastic Potential Energy.
HEAT TRANSFER. HEAT Heat is thermal energy that is in transit (movement). Energy can move from one place, object, or system to another.
Thermal and Chemical Energy. Thermal Energy Thermal Energy Thermal energy is kinetic energy because molecules are in motion. Temperature Temperature =

Energy Transfer Methods of energy Transfer Three ways energy is transferred: 1. Conduction- occurs between objects in direct contact. a. Objects.
Convection Currents Heat is always transferred from warmer substance to a cooler substance. Write down some examples of this concept:
Convection Currents and the Mantle. The Heat of the Earth Earth’s outer core is nearly as hot as the surface of the sun.

Conduction, Convection, Radiation Thermochemistry Conduction, Convection, Radiation

Energy Transformations “Thermochemistry” - concerned with heat changes that occur during chemical reactions Energy - capacity for doing work or supplying heat weightless, odorless, tasteless if within the chemical substances- called chemical potential energy

Energy Transformations Gasoline contains a significant amount of chemical potential energy Heat - represented by “q”, is energy that transfers from one object to another, because of a temperature difference between them. only changes can be detected! flows from warmer  cooler object

3 types of Heat Transfer

Conduction Conduction – heat transferred by particles colliding into one another, such as in a metal. Transfer of energy by touch Not an effective transfer in a gas. Primarily solids Used for cooking on stove tops.

Convection Convection – heat transferred by the circulation of a fluid (or gas), such as in a heating system at home; important near the surface of the Sun. Hot air rises cool air falls Used for baking in ovens.

Radiation Radiation – heat transferred by the flow of electromagnetic radiation, like heat felt from the campfire. Radiation is the only type of heat transfer that can happen in a vacuum. Heat transfer through waves
