The Eight Strands of Social Studies

History Time and chronology, years, and dates. How the past has helped to shape our lives

Geography Location, place, maps, states. People and environments surround us and are ever changing

Economics Wants and needs, goods and services, the flow of money through our society

Government People work to make the laws that influence our lives. Elected officials work with citizens to govern.

Citizenship Rights, responsibilities, pride, hope, being a good neighbor and caring about others.

Culture Holidays, traditions, and stories; foods, customs, and celebrations.

Science, Technology, and Society Inventions, computers, and ideas. Technology has changed the way people live together in the world.

Social Studies Skills Many special skills are needed to learn about the world around us.
