Citavi – Adding References – Articles from EBSCOhost Databases

Open your Citavi project to the Reference Editor workspace – you may need to click on the References tab to get there.

Click on the drop-down Reference menu and select Journal article

On the Library home page, click the button for Databases A-Z.

Then click on the EBSCOhost database that you want to search – Academic Search Complete in this case.

Enter your search term – enclosed in quotation marks if it is a phrase – limit your results to Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) journals if you prefer, and click the Search button.

If the EBSCOhost brief record includes a DOI (digital object identifier), just click on the Citavi symbol next to it.

Citavi writes available citation information into the open reference record, which you then should review to revise or complete if needed – here, for example, delete the repeated periodical title. Then click on File and Save project.

Citavi includes links in the Preview pane on the right to display the source page, in this case the EBSCOhost record, which in turn will link to the article if available in full text.

Even better if the article is available online in full text, you can add it directly into your Citavi reference record by returning to the EBSCOhost record and clicking on a full text link.

If the article is in PDF format, right click your mouse over the article frame, select Citavi Picker, and then click Add as local file to the current Citavi reference.

Now your reference record includes the article itself.

Sometimes an article will be available through EBSCOhost only in HTML format.

In this case, once you’ve exported the citation information to Citavi, in the Preview pane click on Always preview this file immediately.

After the EBSCOhost record displays in the Preview pane, click on the HTML Full Text button to retrieve the article. Next click on Click here to save a copy of this Web page as a PDF.

Citavi converts the EBSCOhost pages, including the article, to PDF format for use within the reference record at your convenience.

If the EBSCOhost brief record does not have a DOI, click on the title to open the full record,

then in the far right column click on Export.

The default format works for Citavi, so click the Save button,

then in the delivery window, click OK.

Ignore the Downloads window, click on the Citavi tab at the bottom of your screen, then click Import.

If all of the words and numbers are properly displayed, click the Next button.

From the drop-down menu, select the order in which the name appears in the AU field, then click the Next button again.

Click the Add to project button in the Import window,

then the OK button in the pop-up window.

Citavi writes available citation information into the reference record, which you then should review to revise or complete if needed. Since the actual article is available online,

return to the EBSCOhost record, click on the full text link, then right click within the PDF document, select Citavi Picker, and left click on Add as local file to the current Citavi reference.

Once again your reference record includes the article itself.
