Types Verbal Irony Dramatic Irony Situational Irony

Situational Irony the difference between what is expected to happen and what actually does recognize the oddness or unfairness of a situation

What type of IRONY is this?

In 1981, while standing next to his car, President Ronald Regan was hit in the chest by a bullet fired by John Hinkley Jr. However, Hinkley's bullet completely missed President Reagan. It bounced off the car's bulletproof window and struck President Reagan in the chest.

A mother walks into a room and sees that her children, instead of doing their homework, are playing video games. She gives them a stern look and says "Once you're done with your very important work there, you should probably take a break and work on more fun things, like math."

... In an effort to restrict viewing of an offensive movie, the city bans showing the movie in theaters. By banning the movie, the city council makes people so curious about the movie, that more people download and view pirated copies of the movie over the internet - specifically because it was banned - than would have viewed it in the theaters to begin with....

After a terrible performance, an actor walks up to a critic and asks how he did. The critic, knowing the show was awful, smiles and says “I have no doubt your performance will get the praise it rightly deserves.”

Isn’t it Ironic? What do YOU think? The song came out in 1995, yet it continues to be something people debate passionately. Comment wars rage over the question in Alanis Morissette’s title: is it ironic? Well, what do you think? Review the three definitions of irony. Next, peruse the many examples Morissette identifies as ironic, and discuss whether or not they are ironic. If they are not, annotate why that is. If they are ironic, annotate the type of irony and explain why.
