Westbrook Contractor Safety Training April 5, 2018 Environmental Policy for Contractors Gordon Lane Sappi North America, Westbrook Operations Environmental & Wastewater Treatment Manager

Sappi’s Environmental Policy We believe that reducing our environmental impact is critical to our company’s success: therefore, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint, conserving energy, decreasing waste, and preventing pollution.

Chemical Storage Properly store all chemicals and flammable materials. Label all chemicals. Separate incompatible materials. Provide containment for oil products stored on site, including lube & gear oils, and petro-based fuel tanks.

Waste Chemicals Contractors are responsible for removing all unused chemicals brought on site. If you generate a hazardous waste but cannot transport the waste off site, contact: Environmental Manager (Ext. 4073), or Treatment Plant Operator (Ext. 4537) Note: Spill materials may be hazardous wastes. All chemical spills must be reported to Plant Protection. Hazardous waste spills must be handled according to State and Federal regulations.

Other Waste Materials Disposition of waste materials should be discussed with your job contact prior to the job. No chemicals or oil products may be put on the ground or in any storm water system at any time. Use of the mill sewer collections system is prohibited unless approved by the Environmental Manager. Dirt, demolition debris, or any other solid waste cannot be disposed on mill property without authorization from the Environmental Manager.

Spill Prevention and Reporting Chemical spills: Report all spills immediately to the Plant Protection Department. Oil spills outside of a building or at risk of entering a sewer drain must be reported immediately to the Plant Protection Department. Minor oil spills: If a small amount of oil is spilled and meets all the following conditions, you must notify your job contact but do not need to report to Plant Protection. The spill is inside secondary containment and / or inside a building, AND It is not flowing to a sewer drain, storm drain, or outside a building, AND It can easily be cleaned with materials at hand (rags, speedi dri), AND There are no other safety or environmental hazards.

Spill Reporting & Clean-Up All Spill Reports go through Plant Protection From a cell: 207-856-4911 From a mill phone: Ext. 4222 Plant Protection will notify the Environmental Department. Spill cleanup, remediation and waste disposal is the responsibility of the contractor. The Environmental Manager must approve spill remediation plans. The Environmental Manager will make proper notification to regulatory agencies.

Ground Breaking, Shoreland Zoning No digging is allowed anywhere on mill property without authorization from the Plant Protection Department. No work involving soil or vegetation disturbance within 250 feet of the Presumpscot River is allowed without authorization from the Environmental Manager.
