SAFETY IN THE SCIENCE LABORATORY FOHI Chemistry

Conduct yourself in a responsible manner; NO HORSEPLAY!

Read instructions before starting experiments Read instructions before starting experiments. Follow all instructions carefully Never work alone!! Never perform any experiments by yourself

Don’t touch anything until instructed to do so.

Do not eat food, drink beverages or chew gum in the lab

Perform only those experiments authorized by the teacher Never Perform Unauthorized Experiments!

Keep work areas clean and tidy; Keep aisles clear

Only lab instructions are allowed at lab bench Only lab instructions are allowed at lab bench. No Backpacks or Purses at Lab Tables

Assigned Lab Station Your lab station should be free of clutter. Clean up and throw away all debris promptly. Backpacks should be left at your desk – DON’T TAKE THEM TO LAB BENCH. You are responsible for cleaning your work area prior to leaving lab. Keep aisles clear. NO sitting on lab counter tops.

Exiting the Lab Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving the lab. Clean up your work station making sure to dispose of all substances properly. Unplug all electrical devices and turn off all gas jets.

Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment…. Eyewash Fire blanket Fire Extinguisher Safety Shower First Aid Kit Exits Fire Alarms

Foreign Matter In Eyes Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water using eye wash or safety shower. Keep eyes wide open while washing and wash for at least 20 minutes. Have your lab partner notify the teacher.

Treating Burns Immediately flush all burns with cold water and send lab partner to notify teacher.

Clothing Fire Turn off all flames and gas jets. Wrap person in fire blanket. Do NOT use water because it may react with the burning substance and intensify fire. Do NOT use a fire extinguisher as it may suffocate the person.

Fire and Fire Drills In case of a fire alarm, do the following: Close ALL containers. Turn off ALL gas valves. Unplug All electrical devices.

Dispose of all chemical waste properly, according to instructions; Clean equipment and work area after use; Return all materials to proper location

Keep hands away from face, eyes and mouth while using chemicals Wash hands thoroughly before leaving lab

Goggles and aprons must be worn at all times during a lab No contact lenses! Wrong! Correct

Chemical Burn of the Eye A chemical burn of the eye can be prevented by WEARING GOGGLES.

Reporting Accidents Report ALL accidents, injuries, fires, and chemical spills to the teacher immediately. Report me.

Dress properly during a lab Tie long hair back No loose, baggy clothing

Attire & Appearance Secure loose garments & roll up long sleeves. Do NOT wear dangling jewelry. Wear long pants. No short shorts allowed. Pull back long hair.

No sandals (shoes should completely cover top of foot) Wear closed toe shoes.

Report any accident or injury to the teacher immediately If chemicals have come in contact with the eyes, begin eyewashing NOW! Remove clothes that have chemical contamination Move everyone away from the area to avoid further contamination

When checking a chemical for odors, gently waft vapors towards nose YES

Double check labels on chemical bottles at least TWICE!! Take only as much chemical as you need; Never return unused chemicals to their original containers;

Clean up all spills immediately Solids should be swept up and placed in the waste disposal container Small liquid spills should be diluted with lots of water and mopped up with a cloth towel. Large spills must be handled by the instructor.

Never use chemicals from an unlabeled container

Never remove chemicals or equipment from the lab

Handling Chemicals Consider ALL chemicals in the chemistry lab to be dangerous. NEVER touch or taste substances used during chemistry lab.

Chemical Disposal Chemical waste should be disposed of as indicated by your teacher. Not all chemicals can be poured down the drain. Do not throw solid materials in the sinks. Keep me healthy Don’t pollute

When diluting acids always add the acid to the water “Pee into water” – add acid to water”

Never handle broken glass with your bare hands Use a dust pan and brush Place broken glass in glass disposal container

Never use chipped, cracked or dirty glassware; Never leave a lit burner unattended;

Heating Test Tubes NEVER point the mouth of a test tube or Erlenmeyer flask at yourself or another person! ALWAYS direct the mouth away from people! Point the opening towards the nearest wall Be aware that “hot” glassware & “cold” glassware look identical. Wrong! Correct!

Never look down into a container that is being heated; Be careful – hot glass doesn’t look hot!

Keep Flammable Substances Away From Heat Sources

Never Heat a Closed Container The increasing pressure in the container can cause the contents to spray out the top, or the container shatters, spreading shards of glass

Never pipet by mouth NO YES

Chemistry Common Storage Areas Students are NEVER permitted in science storage rooms or preparation areas unless given special permission by an instructor.
