Gender ICT Statistics Second Meeting of the Working Group on Gender Issues  Geneva, 7–9 June 2003 Prepared by: Esperanza Magpantay

Topics Indicators, Challenges, Results Meetings WTIM (January 2003) WSIS Statistical Side Event (Dec. 8-9, 2003) Gender Issues in MEF work Conclusions

Indicators we collect ITU collects ICT indicators and publishes them annually Gender-related indicators collected are: Number of male and female telecommunication staff Female Internet users as % of total users Female Internet users as % of female users Note: Female Internet users as % of total users is reported in the UN MDG monitoring report and database

Challenges Not all countries collect gender ICT statistics Very few countries have official surveys (such as household surveys) to collect gender disaggregated statistics Data hard to get specifically for developing countries A very few private research companies provide limited gender Internet users for a few countries but quality and comparability of data is a problem

Steps taken Included gender session in our last World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Meeting Include gender ICT indicators in presentations to WSIS Statistical Side Event in December 2003 Ask countries for additional information on gender and ICT through e-readiness case studies carried out by the unit Updated our annual questionnaire to include more gender ICT statistics

World Telecom/ICT Indicators Meeting Attended by 140 participants, including 50 women 5 out of 9 sessions were chaired by women 12 out of 24 presentations were made by women One full session dedicated to Gender ICT indicators

ITU experience Source: ITU World Telecommunication Indicators Database Results of collecting gender-based telecommunication staff 1999 2000 2001 Number of countries reporting total telecom employees 195 164 181 Per cent of total 86% 73% 77% Number of countries reporting female telecom employees 68 53 67 As a percent of those reporting total telecom employees 35% 32% 34% Percentage of telecom employees that are female (weighted average) 29% Percentage of telecom employees that are female (simple average) 33% 31% Source: ITU World Telecommunication Indicators Database

Female Internet users as % of all users, 39 countries, 2002 Note!!! I can’t fit the chart that shows individual country’s data. -Covering 39 countries Interpretation Example: 5% of all (39) countries has 50% or more female Internet users. Source: ITU World Telecommunication Indicators Database

Conclusions Much discussion about ICT gender statistics, but few concrete and realistic indicators are collected and available Possible indicators: Internet users PC users Mobile phone subscribers Female ICT personnel Best solution lays with national statistical agencies through household surveys
