Energy ADP & ATP

What is Energy? Energy is the ability to do work. Energy can be found in a number of different forms. chemical energy, electrical energy, heat (thermal energy), light (radiant energy), mechanical energy, and nuclear energy.

What is ATP? Adenosine Triphosphate The principle compound used to store chemical energy used by all cells Organic molecule containing high- energy phosphate bonds

Chemical Structure of ATP Adenine Ribose 3 Phosphate groups High Energy Phosphate Bonds

Chemical Structure of ATP Contains the nitrogen base adenine, a ribose sugar, and THREE phosphate molecules Contains two, high-energy phosphate bonds

What does ATP do for you? It supplies you with ENERGY!

How do we get energy from ATP? By breaking the high- energy chemical bonds between the last two phosphates in ATP

How does ATP get made? ATP gets made during a process called cellular respiration that takes place in both plants & animals.

What is ADP? Adenosine Diphosphate Contains the nitrogen base adenine, a ribose sugar, and TWO phosphate molecules

How does ADP get made? When your body needs energy, ATP breaks the bond between the last two phosphates. This releases energy, a phosphate, and ADP

Releasing Energy From ATP Adding a phosphate group to ADP stores energy in ATP Removing a phosphate group from ATP releases energy & forms ADP Lose Gain

Cells Using Biochemical Energy Cells Use ATP For: Active transport Movement Photosynthesis Protein synthesis Cellular respiration All other cellular reactions
