1 Energy In Cells

2 Energy The ability to do work.
Needed by all living things all the time. Two ways to obtain energy: From food From the sun

3 Autotrophs Organisms, such as plants, that use the sun energy to make their own food. Plants can’t “eat” their food, so they must make it to be able to make energy.

4 heterotroph Organisms, such as animals, that obtain energy from the foods they consume. All energy is direct or indirectly from the sun! Sunplantanimal

5 Releasing energy All organisms, including plants, must release the energy in sugars and other compounds in order to actually use it. This is why ALL eukaryotes have mitochondria.

6 ATP Adenosine triphosphate.
The principal chemical compound that cells use to store and release energy. Storing energy ADP (adenosine diphosphate) adds another phosphate group to form ATP Releasing energy ATP releases a phosphate group to become ADP

7 Uses of energy Active transport Movement
Synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids Response to chemical signals Produce light

8 Processes to obtain energy
Cellular Respiration Photosynthesis
