Background Information Although this story is a fantasy, it is based on real animal behavior. Cats prey on mice, birds, and other small animals. Crows are attracted to shiny objects, and they will use variety of materials to build their nests including yarn, plastic strips, string, paper, and aluminum foil.

Browse Read the title aloud, and point out the names of the author and the illustrator. Think about what this story has to do with the theme Risks and Consequences. Because this is fiction, we will use the CPW chart to organize information. After the CPW chart browse the story again. Look for unfamiliar words, concepts, or ideas.

Inquiry Process Make a Conjecture A conjecture is an explanation of something that we suggest based on what we know now. Conjectures can be proved right or wrong, or they can be modified by the evidence. The characters so far in our stories have taken risks. I know some people who never take risks but instead “play it safe.” The research question that interests me is “Why are some people more willing to take risks than others?” Make a conjecture about why some people are more willing to take risks than others.
