In Algebra, we are learning about… Numbers and Operations The Real Number System, Quantities Linear Equations and Inequalities Seeing Structure in Expression, Arithmetic, Creating Equations, Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities Functions Interpreting and Building Functions; Linear, Quadratic and Exponential Models Data and Statistics Interpreting Categorical and Quantitative Data

Ways to Student Success Students should be bringing these materials EVERY DAY TO CLASS: Math notebook, pencil, calculator* To help contribute to your student success: Check their math notebook on a regular basis Ask them to explain concepts to you Check the website and the Source to look for assignments and grades Ask about homework, they have it everyday unless it’s posted on the website that they don’t Check and see if there are pencils in their binder

Typical Math Day/Week We come in, we start with an entry task Students write down learning target in math notebook Learning target is derived directly from the standard we are working on (you can check out all math standards on OSPI website: Google search “OSPI Math Standards”) Students write or tape/glue in most notes and activities in math class into math notebook Homework is assigned most days. Students have between 5-10 problems and they are most likely in the book Students can turn in homework late (more on this…)

Class Website hillaryloganmath.wordpress.com update website daily or every other day Everyday I post a summary of what we did in class every day as well as post links to any important notes or worksheets that will be due. I post updates of what is going on in class and important information students and families should know including changes in class(i.e. test day is changed)

Grading Math will be Standards Based Graded This means reflective of what students know and can do surrounding state math standards based on scope and sequence of SPS math curriculum Academic grade based on summative assessment only with a possibility to retake to meeting standard No penalty for late work although homework completion required for assessment retake Effort grade based on class work, behaviors like participation, organization, notebook maintenance, homework completion Citizenship grade based on Responsible Scholar Rubric

Standards based grading model Standards Based Score Weight Letter Grade Exceeding Standard – Student is meeting standard, and in addition is going above and beyond just finding correct answer 4 A Meeting Standard – Student demonstrates proficiency in concept by correctly using math skill or explaining concept 3 B Approaching Standard – student is approaching proficiency, but has errors 2 C Beginning Standard – student does not demonstrate enough understanding of standard, incorrect math concept 1 retake   No Evidence – although present and able, student shows no understanding of standard Incomplete – student did not take or complete assessment

High School Requirements Students are allowed to apply for High School credit for this Algebra class (more info in the spring) Since this grade will appear on a high school transcript seen by college, I recommend applying it only if it is a C or higher End of Course assessment: Students will take it in June and MUST PASS TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL in Washington state. Failure to pass will result taking it again in high school until it is passed

Common Core Standards of Mathematical Practice Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
