The Future of Biodiversity Chapter 10 Section Three

Saving Species – One at a Time Should we spend the money to save a few individuals? Captive breeding – used to restore a population, California condor Preserve genetic material – Germ plasm: saving reproductive cells to use in future breeding programs Zoos, aquariums, parks, gardens – home to few remaining individuals of an endangered species

Preserving Habitats and Ecosystems Protecting habitats saves species Save an ecosystem, not a species Use products harvested with sustainable practices

Legal Protection Endangered Species Act – 1973, USFWS maintains list, protects species from human harm, US can’t do anything to hurt a listed species USFWS must have a plan for each listed species, often protects habitat

International Cooperation IUCN – International Union for the Conservation of Nature, publishes the Red List of endangered species & advises govt. CITES – Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species Biodiversity Treaty – save biodiversity & ensure the fair use of genetic resources
