Day Four DIVERSITY It’s In Every One Of Us! CRAIG Remind why this is such an important part of Woodbadge Look at the staff Look at the Participants There is a lot of Diversity in the room One of your Ticket Items must focus on Leveraging Diversity Invite Open Discussion to make presentation more effective

Why Diversity Inclusion is the right thing to do Our differences makes us stronger Respond to changing demographics Need to respect one another’s difference One way to demonstrate that we value others is to recognize it, celebrate it, use it KRIS Inclusion We're all smart enough to realize the detrimental effects of exclusion on our society Demographics Think about the country as a whole Think about BSA Think about your unit Segue Lets looks at what famous people had to say about Diversity and Change

Types Of Diversity Human Cultural Organizational KRIS

Human Diversity What we are: Gender Race Age Appearance Health Who we are: Education Marital/Parental status Occupation Geographic Location KRIS

Cultural Diversity Language Lifestyle Heritage Belief System Religious Beliefs Traditions KRIS

Organizational Diversity Teamwork Roles Relationships Leadership Empowerment Education and Training Affiliations KRIS

Diversity Makes Us Stronger Everyone gets involved Different backgrounds allow for new looks at old problems Out of differences come new ideas and inspirations We are stronger together than apart CRAIG Our backgrounds sometimes get in the way of seeing solutions to the problems at hand. Leveraging diversity opens up new paths to explore to solve those problems This is a concept that we as Americans should be very familiar with. Do you remember United We Stand, Divided We fall or the Join or Die Cartoon from the Revolutionary War era E Pluribus Unum - - - - - Out of many, One

Using Diversity to Make BSA Better Aggressively recruit diverse members and leaders Identify and challenge unacceptable /demeaning behavior Encourage everyone to contribute their backgrounds, talents, and experiences Serve as a role model CRAIG

Barriers to Leveraging Diversity We resist change Comfort in sameness Peer pressure CRAIG Give me some ideas on what you think are barriers to using diversity

Falling Short We all make mistakes Apologize Ask for guidance KEEP TRYING! CRAIG Ironically, we usually fall short & mess up due to a lack of understanding of the diversity that we are trying to comprehend. Sort of a Catch-22

Responding to Others A Scout is Friendly A Scout is Reverent KRIS A scout is a friend to all. He is a brother to all scouts. He offers his friendship to people of all races and nations and respects them even if their beliefs and customs are different from his own. Discuss the BSA Commitment to religion and how those that don't believe are cannot participate in the Scouting program Even though we don't agree on this there may be hundreds of things that we have in common. Focus on those, set aside the differences and move on with working together As a leader, be sure the YOU are being the proper role model A Scout is Friendly A Scout is Reverent

Leveraging Diversity & Leading Change 400 years ago 1849 Today The future? CRAIG Over time, Diversity will generate change…its inevitable. A diverse society is always developing, growing, evolving When you think of The United States what state comes to mind as being the most DIVERSE California Was it always this way?NO Lets look at some history: 400 Years ago only natives to the land were there same as for thousands of years 1849 What event happened?. Gold Rush Hundreds of European Decent Settlers moved in and changed everything As time progressed, then came peoples of Asian Decent and others and others until Today More non-whites than white What does the future hold for Califorina? For our country It will be much different than we know it today. It is a safe bet that the changes will be driven by the diversity of the people living here

Group Discussion Diversity issues in your unit? How can you leverage them to change for the better? KRIS & CRAIG Reorganize into different groups (Use Critter Cards) Discuss diversity in one of your units and use it as a case study After about 10 minutes, we'll get a few groups too report on what was learned Be sure that you remember to follow the SIX STEPS TO LEADING CHANGE How did it feel to be in a different group? Was there Diversity in the new group? Did you see any team dynamics taking place? Group Reports/Feedback

Points to Remember We are stronger when we are diverse. We are stronger when we make diversity work for us. Leading change to become more diverse is critical for Scouting to remain relevant. KRIS

High Performance Teams are stronger when they have and utilize diverse membership CRAIG How will you leverage diversity to lead a change? WHAT will YOUR ticket item be?
