3 My schedule says, Read 180 … so what is this class?
Well – Read 180 is a place where we do a lot of reading, writing, and discussing! BUT in a way that is different than any other class.

4 Why I teach Read 180 Me 3 Years Ago
Hmm… I am not sure if it will work in the schedule, but I will keep it in mind. Me 3 Years Ago Mr. Adams… please, please, please let me teach Read 180!

5 Why I love teaching Read 180
We get to practice reading and writing skills that come up in all subjects – science, social studies, and language arts We get to explore real world topics and events and explore world issues! We focus on types of reading and writing that happens in the real world Without the pressure of big projects and the stress that sometimes comes from other classes. TALK HERE ABOUT LEVEL 2 CLASS AND HS PREP! SO MANY OF MY STUDENT’S NOW COME BACK FROM HS AND TELL ME THAT THIS CLASS WAS ONE OF THE BEST HELP TO THEM IN HS.

6 Real World Reading and Writing
What does it take to create change in the world? How do we deal with issues that affect society today, like environmental disasters? DEBATE: Should all people work to fight the causes of environmental disasters like drought or only those affected? Why do people follow the crowd? How do some societies become a “world gone bad?” YR 1

7 Real World Reading and Writing
What are the causes, effects, and tragedies that come from societies in severe conflict? What happens when a societies leader is assassinated? DEBATE: Are we becoming more susceptible to superbugs and super-viruses? DEBATE: Should students and staff be forced to go home from school when they are sick? What are the effects of sports on teens? Are some sports too extreme for kids and teens? YR 2

8 Choice This class is designed to help you become even stronger readers and writers in all of your classes, while exploring topics that interest YOU!!! Choice is a big part of this class …. Often, you get to choose articles, topics, books, and writing topics that interest you.

9 We get to do all of this…while learning a little differently.
We learn in a variety of ways! Explore topics, events, and places together through shared reading Academic Discussions You choose other topics, issues, articles and books to explore independently Small group and other group work Use a variety of technology

11 So, what do I say when someone asks: what is Read 180?
Well, you can say a few things. You could say: It’s a reading and writing academic elective We get to explore real world reading and writing. It’s like a high school prep class for reading and writing

Number your paper. Jot down your ideas and answers to these questions, any way you like. Did your group have a leader? If so, how was the leader chosen? What was your role in the group? How did you team come up with the plan for your tower? How did your group deal with the challenges and frustrations that came up? On a scale of 1-5 rate how well your group worked together. Why did you give your group this rating? On a scale of 1-5 rate your participation in this activity. Why did you give yourself that rating?

15 Pair and Share PAIR - Partner with someone in your table group and share you ideas to two of the questions. SHARE – Volunteers share answers with the whole class!

16 Capture our Ideas … Chart it!
What does collaboration look like and sound like? What does it mean to be a leader? Other take-aways from this activity?

17 Exit Ticket … One a post-it note, write your name and your answer to one of these things: Either: Something you are excited for in this class. A question you have. Hand this to me on your way out of class.
