Ingredient List- The ingredient that makes up the food, and the largest share of the weight is listed 1st Food additives- Substances added to a food to produce a desired effect. To keep food longer Boost nutrient content Improve taste, texture or appearance
Nutritional Claims Free- Food contains none or an insignificant amount of fat, sugar, sat fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium or calories Low- You can eat this food regularly without exceeding your daily limits for fat, cholesterol, sodium, or calories. Light- Must contain 1/3 fewer calories, 1/2 the fat, or ½ the sodium of the original version
Reduced- Food contains 25 percent fewer calories than original version High- Food provides at least 20 percent of the daily value for a vitamin, mineral, protein, or fiber Good Source of- Food provides 10-19 percent of the daily value for a vitamin, mineral, protein, or fiber
Healthy- Must be low in fat, and saturated fat, and contain limited amounts of cholesterol and sodium. Must also provide at least 10 percent of the daily value for vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium, protein, or fiber
Open dating Sell by dates- Last day a store should sell and freshness isn’t guaranteed after this Use by or Expiration dates- Last date the products quality is guaranteed Freshness dates- For items with a short shelf life like baked goods Pack dates- Shows when product was processed of packaged
Food safety Foodborne illness- Food poisoning Bacteria and viruses cause most cases of this Pasteurization- Treating a substance with heat to kill or slow the growth of pathogens Clean- Wash and dry your hands frequently
Cross Contamination- The spreading of pathogens from one food to another Food Allergy- A condition in which the body’s immune system reacts to substances in some foods Food intolerance- A negative reaction to food that doesn’t involve the immune system Lactose intolerance
