Explain.  What information on the food label are you most concerned with and why??  Are there certain nutritional words used on the front of product labels that would make you want to purchase it (fat free, lite, lean, fewer calories, low in sodium)?

2 Nutritional Labeling  Nutrition Facts Panel: - Required by law to be placed on packages of food that are intended for sale. of food that are intended for sale.  Ingredients List: - The ingredient in the greatest amount first, and so on…. - Food additives- substances intentionally added to food to produce a desired effect (enhance a food’s flavor, color, or lengthen its storage life).

6 DO NOT COPY Product Labeling  Nutrient content claim: - Light/Lite – calories have been reduced by 1/3 or the fat or sodium has been reduced by 50%. - Less – contains 25% less of a nutrient or calories than a comparable food. - Free – contains zero or an insignificant amount of total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, sugars, or calories. - More - contains 10% more of the Daily Value for a vitamin, mineral, protein, or fiber.

7  High, Rich In, or Excellent Source Of – food contains 20% more of Daily Value for a vitamin, mineral, protein, or fiber.  Lean - the food is a meat, poultry, fish, or shellfish product that has less than 10 grams of total fat, less than 4 grams of saturated fat, and a lower level of cholesterol.
