Presentation transcript:

From Broad General Education to Senior Phase Broad General Education: S1 – S3 8 Curriculum Areas Senior Phase: S4 – S6 S4: 7 subjects (National 4/5) S5: 5 subjects (National 5/H) S6: 4 subjects (National 5/H/AH) This slide shows the structure of the curriculum and how the numbers of subjects studied by pupils varies from year to year in the Senior Phase. It also shows the level of qualification that is most likely to be undertaken in each year.

Broad General Education in S3 Mathematics Languages (English & French) RME Health & Wellbeing (PE & PSE) Science Social Studies Expressive Arts Technologies 2 Electives (choice from every course in every Curriculum Area) This slide shows how the broad general education has been organised and shows all 8 curricular areas. Those in black are curricular areas where there was not a choice in S3 and those in green are where pupils were able to make a choice. In addition to covering all curricular areas they added breadth and personalised their curriculum by selecting 2 further courses from all areas of the curriculum – the electives.

What is the Senior Phase for? All young people in Scotland have an entitlement to a senior phase of education which: provides specialisation, depth and rigour prepares them well for achieving qualifications to the highest level of which they are capable continues to develop skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work continues to provide a range of activities which develop the four capacities supports them to achieve a positive and sustained destination. (educationscotland.gov.uk) The purposes of the Senior Phase – according to Education Scotland

Senior Phase No longer bound by Curriculum Areas restrictions S4: 7 subjects (National 4/5) S5: 5 subjects (National 5/H) S6: 4 subjects (National 5/H/AH) Most likely to pick 7 from your 9 S3 subjects. Assessment throughout S4 if National 4 presentation; exams in May 2018 if National 5 presentation. This slide explains that in the Senior Phase pupils no longer have to ensure that all curriculum areas are covered. It also shows again the number of subjects and likely levels of study at each stage. It provides the advice that S4 subjects should be 7 of the S3 9 courses and provides information regarding assessment within N4 and 5 courses.

Which subjects? Choose 7 of your 9 S3 subjects. (Must include English and Maths.) Best 7? Subjects needed for future career aspirations? Subjects you like? Skills / opportunities you enjoy? Good combinations? Only choose a new subject for S4 if you are certain; do not choose more than 1 new subject. Reinforces 7 of the S3 9 subjects. Must include English and Maths. Pupils do not need to continue with French. Gives other suggestions of factors that pupils should / may wish to consider when selecting their S4 subjects. Provides advice re a new S4 subject and advises(!) against more than 1 new subject in S4 - no pupil should have more than 1 new subject.
