Dream Big. Act Small. Setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals REMEMBER TO FOLLOW CHAMPs!!! Need catalyst CHAMPs anchor chart

Dream Big. Act Small. “Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.”—Langston Hughes “How do you go from where you are to where you want to be? I think you have to have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal, and you have to be willing to work for it.”—Jim Valvano

Dream Big. Act Small. Every decision matters. You have to have a plan. Today is about YOU.

CHAMPs during Quick Write C – No talking unless called on by raising hand. H – By raising hand. A – Quick Write M – Stay in seat. P – Doing Quick Write Show them this then have them practice. Explain that while I am talking that if everyone follows CHAMPs then they will receive class sticker.

Title: Quick Write #1--Goals Think of a time when you wanted to accomplish something. What was the goal? Write about the steps you had to take to accomplish that goal and how it worked out. Be sure to write in paragraph form. 5 minutes

Turn and Talk Turn and talk to a neighbor about your quick write goal.

Why is setting a goal important? Read Michael Jordan’s thoughts on goals. I approach everything step by step....I had always set short-term goals.  As I look back, each one of the steps or successes led to the next one.  When I got cut from the varsity team as a sophomore in high school, I learned something.  I knew I never wanted to feel that bad again....So I set a goal of becoming a starter on the varsity.  That’s what I focused on all summer.  When I worked on my game, that’s what I thought about.  When it happened, I set another goal, a reasonable, manageable goal that I could realistically achieve if I worked hard enough....I guess I approached it with the end in mind.  I knew exactly where I wanted to go, and I focused on getting there.  As I reached those goals, they built on one another.  I gained a little confidence every time I came through.  ...If [your goal is to become a doctor]...and you’re getting Cs in biology then the first thing you have to do is get Bs in biology and then As.  You have to perfect the first step and then move on to chemistry or physics. Take those small steps.  Otherwise you’re opening yourself up to all kinds of frustration.  Where would your confidence come from if the only measure of success was becoming a doctor?  If you tried as hard as you could and didn’t become a doctor, would that mean your whole life was a failure?   Of course not.  All those steps are like pieces of a puzzle.  They all come together to form a picture....Not everyone is going to be the greatest....But you can still be considered a success....Step by step, I cant see any other way of accomplishing anything.

What are the characteristics of a good goal? S – Specific—Give details! M – Measurable—Numbers! A – Attainable—Can you get there? R – Relevant/Reasonable—Why is it important? T - Time-bound—How will you keep track of your progress Need an anchor chart for SMART goals.

Example 1 Is it specific? Yes Is it measurable? Yes Is it attainable? My goal is to run 5 miles. Is it measurable? Yes Is it attainable? Maybe? Is it relevant? Maybe? Is it time-bound? No

Example 1 Revised Is it specific? Yes Is it measurable? Yes My goal is to run 5 miles by the end of the month. I will do this by running 4 times a week at the track at school. The first week I will run 1 mile each day. The second week I will run 2 miles. The third week I will run 3 miles for the first two days and then 3.5 miles the last two days. The last week I will run 4 miles the first two days and 4.5 miles the last two day. I want to do this to lose weight. Is it measurable? Yes Is it attainable? Yes Is it relevant? Yes Is it time-bound? Yes

CHAMPs during goal setting C – No talking unless called on by raising hand. H – By raising hand. A – Goal setting M – Stay in seat. P – Setting your goal Show them this then have them practice. Explain that while I am talking that if everyone follows CHAMPs then they will receive class sticker.
