FLA/SLA: Theories Yes or No?

FLA: BIG questions   Is SLA the same process as FLA? If not, does it have anything in common? What is the role of “learner-internal” factors such as age, motivation, etc? What is the role of “learner-external factors such as socialization, motivation, opportunity, etc?

Learning Theories: 1. Behaviorism: say what I say 2 Learning Theories: 1. Behaviorism: say what I say 2. Innatism: It’s all in your mind -Universal Grammar -LAD 3. Critical Period

Universal Grammar: Principles and Parameters Movement: He is French. / Is he French? 2. Addition: She is Belgian. / She is not Belgian. 3. Deletion: Is he coming tonight?/ Yes. (He’s coming tonight.) 4. Substitution: Juan is Nicaraguan. / Juan is Nicaraguan, isn’t he? (not isn’t John)

What is the universal principle and a parameter when driving a car?

Translate these sentences into English Rosa bebe lentamente el café. Lentamente Rosa bebe el café. Rosa lentamente bebe el café. Rosa bebe el café lentamente. 5. ¿Irás al cine esta noche?

Input (Krashen, 1985) “humans acquire language in only one way, by understanding message or by receiving “compehensible input”

Klein’s Chinese Room (1986)

Interactionist/developmental perspective Close relationship between children’s cognitive development and their acquisition of language Piaget (1896-1980) language can be used to represent knowledge acquired through physical interaction Vigotsky (1896-1934) Thought was essentially internalized speech, and speech emerged in social interaction

ZPD, Vygotsky

Connectionism Language acquisition is a process of associating words and phrases with the other words and phrases that occur with them, or words with grammatical morphemes that occur with them Nacatamal!

Clarifying FLA (T-F) WHAT’S THE ROLE OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN LANGUAGE ACQUISITION? DO YOU THINK THAT THE SIMPLIFIED INPUT (MOTHERESE, CHILD DIRECTED SPEECH, FOREIGNER TALK) THAT CHILDREN ARE EXPOSED TO REALLY CONTRIBUTES TO LANGUAGE ACQUISITION? EXPLAIN COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT.

1. Name 3 factors in L1 acquisition and provide examples. 2 1. Name 3 factors in L1 acquisition and provide examples. 2. Language acquisition is the result of imitation, practice and feedback on success, and habit formation. (True or False. elaborate on your answer) 3. What is the importance of Universal Grammar, principles and parameters? 4. Imitation does not help the learner in real-life situations. (True or False. elaborate on your answer) 5. Name two things you have learned from FLA.

Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea Salvador Dali showing us what we may miss if we continue to look at the world in our customary way

Information processing

2. That language + how language 1. Automaticity 2. That language + how language 3. Restructuring 4. Backsliding 5. Transfer appropriate process

Connectionism

1. The environment is key 2. Emphasis on the frequency 3. Exposure to language 4. Chunks

The Competition Model

1. Language forms, meaning, use 2. Learning different language uses

Interaction Hypothesis

Interaction Hypothesis, conversational interaction 1. Modified interaction, opportunity to interact 2. Language modification, modified interaction 3. Interactional modification promotes acquisition Comprehension checks Clarification requests Paraphrase Negotiate for meaning 5. The comprehensible output hypothesis

Noticing Hypothesis

Noticing Nothing is learned unless it is noticed, the starting point Input processing, form and meaning processed at the same time

Processability Theory

1. Word processing, developmental sequence 2 1. Word processing, developmental sequence 2. Not only transfer features, but process the language
