Old Synagogue in Berdichev Ukraine, no longer in use In Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union there were many synagogues. In villages like Berdichev that were heavily populated with Jews there were often many synagogues. Many Jews who lived in places like Berdichev either perished in the war or moved to other bigger cities in the USSR. Their synagogues were often co-opted by the state and used for storage as I believe the case is with this synagogue
