Our city is interesting! about places in Zgierz which are worth visiting

Weavers’ melting pot Zgierz, a small town in the centre of Poland, used to be famous for its weavers, textile industry and national diversity. The Jews, Poles, Germans and Russians once lived here more or less peacefully making their living. Walking in the town you can see some remains of the past.

St. Catherine’s Church is considered to be the most beautiful site of Zgierz and its symbol. Architected by Stefan Lemmene, it is actually the fourth church built on the same hill, the previous three were destroyed. The temple, 47.5 meters long and 20 meters high, is built in the neo-Gothic style. It is distinguished by two towers and the ogival windows, which are characteristic of the Gothic style. There are 62 wide gradual steps leading to the temple, and the sides of the main gate are decorated with statues of St. John & St. Roch. From the the top of the stairs there is a breathtaking view of the town.

Long Street – it is the main street of our town extending from the John Paul II Square (former the Old Market Square) to the borders of the town and it is the longest street in Zgierz.

Jewish cemetery in Zgierz of 1.5 hectares was founded in 1826 by Baron Henry Street today and expanded in 1885. Devastated by the Germans during the World War II: gravestones were used as material for hardening roads, trees uprooted and the whole area plowed. After the war the devastation continued until not a single tombstone was left. In 1992 thanks to the efforts of a group of former Jewish residents of Zgierz (currently residing in Canada) the cemetery was cleaned and fenced. Within the fenced area a plaque in Polish and Hebrew commemorates the Zgierz Jews buried in this cemetery since its inception in the early nineteenth century until its destruction during World War II.

Rope Park is located in a green area in the centre of Zgierz and seems to be the greatest attraction for the people here. The park offers 3 routes (two for adults, one for children) consisting of 49 obstacles, expanded 10 meters above the ground, on 522 meters long rope.
