Deciduous Forest Where we live! 4 Seasons- Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Mild Summers and Winters: Summer months usually begin in early June and end in late August. Winter months don't begin until December. Moderate Rainfall: average 30 to 60 inches a year. Almost all of the world's deciduous forest is located by an ocean. The ocean and the wind play a role in the temperature and climate change of changing seasons.

Deciduous Forest Deciduous forests contain trees that have leaves that change colors seasonally and fall off during cold seasons Carotenoids- pigment produced in the chloroplast during the fall seasons. Gives leaves the red, yellow, and orange colors. Plants include: Maples, Oaks, Hickory Broad leaves allow more sunlight to be captured for photosynthesis

Others include Carpet Moss, Pecan, Tawny Milksap Mushroom, Lady Fern, and White Birch http://comountainland.com/48_csr.htm http://www.dustinryan.com/Charleston-Photography/index.php?showimage=253

Animals Deer, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons Adaptations: -Birds migrate during the colder seasons to warmer climates. -Animals shed fur during the warmer seasons. -Hibernation- period of dormancy and little activity to slow metabolism when food is more scarce.

Tropical Rain Forest A forest of tall trees in a region of year-round warmth. This forest also has the most fertile soil of all the forests and is defined by the amount of rain it gets per year. Hot, humid, heavy rainfall, An average of 50 to 260 inches of rain falls yearly. Temperatures between 93° and 68°. http://english.cri.cn/mmsource/image/2005-5-23/scene01.jpg

Occurs around the equator, South America, Southeast Asia, parts of Africa. http://www.windows2universe.org/earth/images/rainforest_map_big2.jpg

Tropical Rain Forest Wettest and Hottest Biome on Earth! Over 100 inches of rainfall a year No Seasons - Soil is very nutrient-poor More Biodiversity than any other biome 70% of the species are trees

These plants help define the layers of the rainforests These plants help define the layers of the rainforests. The top layer is the Emergent Layer, then the canopy. The canopy layer receives the most light of all the layers. Next is the understory layer. After that is the shrub layer, the light in this layer is very limited so the plants that grow are adapted to survive on low light. The next layer is the forest floor, less than 1% of light reaches this layer. Last is the subterranean layer, which means that this layer is under the ground. http://www.thewildclassroom.com/biomes/rainforests/images/rainforestlayers.jpg
