Insight (Launched in September 2014) The online benchmarking tool designed to help bring about improvements for learners in the senior phase (S4 to S6). It is a professional tool for secondary schools and local authorities to identify areas of success and where improvements can be made. Partners Scottish Government Education Scotland SQA SDS SCQF School Leaders Scotland Association of Directors of Education and Schools General Teaching Council Educational Institute Scotland

Before Insight (pre September 2014) Data used mainly for accountability and reporting purposes Can’t understand instructional improvement using the reporting agenda What impact did looking at (only) this data have on learners?

How do we use Insight data? Impact on Learners To inform practice at a ‘Learning and Teaching’ and ‘Curriculum’ level

Insight – Input Data SQA award data Census Information Entered at School level on SEEMiS ASN/EAL Characteristics LAC status Gender Stage (ie S4) Ethnicity Other Awards Providers (SCQF accredited) SCN SIMD Information http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Statistics/SIMD Skills Development Scotland leavers’ information and destinations

Insight – Input Data - SIMD

Insight – Output – Conceptually ‘Surfaces’ information about attainment and achievement at point of exit from school Allows schools to interrogate data in a way that meets the needs of all young people Provides the ability to look at different cohorts of pupils Reflects performance within a school’s context VIRTUAL COMPARATOR

Insight – Output – Virtual Comparator 10 Learners with similar characteristics From outwith Learner Xs Local Authority AVERAGE ACHIEVEMENT Learner X Gender Stage ASN status SIMD status ACHIEVEMENT

Insight - Output – The Dashboard Teachers log in (web based) Authenticate using SEEMIS credentials Literacy and Numeracy Leaver Initial Destinations Improving Attainment for All (tariff based measure) Attainment versus Deprivation (tariff based measure) Tariff points do not reflect value of qualification to the learner.

How can we actually use it? To encourage professional reflection and collaborative working To prompt reflective questions To develop an understanding of the ‘shape’ of your school to allow you to plan for highly effective learning and teaching

How do we actually use it?

How do we actually use it? Identify areas for whole school Improvement Planning In this example – Improving outcomes for highest attaining 20% Understand how department planning /classroom teaching contributes to improving outcomes for this group of young people In this example- Curriculum – do courses and programmes meet needs L+T – are classroom teachers encouraged and supported to provide learning programmes with appropriate pace and challenge, higher order thinking skills, progression, opportunities for independent learning etc.

Insight – We need you Only being used well in some schools (previous experience of Insight’s predecessor) Classroom teachers need to take more ownership If we are going to improve outcomes for young people – the focus should always be centred around planning for good quality and now data intelligent Learning and Teaching.
