Introduction to Avant -Garde Arts Francesca E. Ricciuti

Pushing the Boundaries of “Normal” Experimental Innovative Radical Pushing the Boundaries of “Normal” Shocking Controversial Unorthodox

Avant-Garde vs. Post-Modernism Post-modernism – late 20th century art, architecture, criticism movement. Beliefs: The world is in a perpetual state of incompleteness and unresolve. Pluralism: there are many ways of knowing and many truths to one fact. Avant-Garde – term used to describe a movement in art, literature, film, architecture, photography, fashion, etc. to describe a group of artists who are forward thinking for their time. Forward thinking or interpreting in a way that embraces or rejects a thought or opinion. ALL movements have a manifesto of sorts.

Placing Avant-Garde Movements on a Timeline Shows How Difficult it Has Been to Track All Movments Throughout History. Happening (1950’s) Fauvism (1905) Supremism (1920’s) Pop Art (1950’s) Henri de Saint-Simon (1825) Constructivism (1913) And the list goes on… CoBrA (1948) Hip Hop (1970’s) Tachisme (1950’s-1960’s) Dada (1916) Impressionism Era (1870’s) Analytical Cubism (1908) Precisionism (1930’s) Abstract Expressionism (1940’s) Conceptualism (1917) Realism (1850)

Fauvism 1905 early twentieth-century modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong colors versus realistic values as in Impressionism.

Constructivists took an artistic outlook which aimed to include cognitive, material activity, and the whole of spirituality of mankind. The artists tried to create art that would take the viewer out of the traditional setting and make them an active viewer of the artwork. Contsructivism Painting by Constructivist Kasimir Malevich (1878 - 1935)

The Futurists explored every medium of art, including painting, sculpture, poetry, theatre, music, architecture and even gastronomy. The Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti was the first among them to produce a manifesto of their artistic philosophy in his Manifesto of Futurism (1909), first released in Milan Futurism 1910’s Futurist book design and typography

Pablo Picasso, 1910, Girl with a Mandolin (Fanny Tellier) Cubism In Cubist artwork, objects are analyzed, broken up and reassembled in an abstracted form; instead of depicting objects from a single viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context Pablo Picasso, 1910, Girl with a Mandolin (Fanny Tellier)

Dada or Dadaism is a cultural movement that began in neutral Zürich, Switzerland, during World War I. The movement primarily involved visual arts and literature which concentrated its anti war politic through a rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works. Merz. Issue 8.

CoBrA was a European avant-garde movement active from 1948 to 1951. The name was coined in 1948 by Christian Dotremont from the initials of the members' home cities: Copenhagen (Co), Brussels (Br), Amsterdam (A).

Avant-Garde Make-Up Avant-Garde in fashion or make-up is meant to spark a reaction or provoke thought. The artist interprets something in a way that may cause observers to question their original belief of the topic or adopt a another truth about this topic. Make-up and clothing is not meant to be wearable. It is a work of art, not street clothing. Ask yourself, how do I see this? What is my opinion? What do I want others to think about this that they currently do not?

What do you see?
