Action for Healthy Kids Wellness Policy Tool Who Are We? Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) is a national grassroots partnership created to address the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes in schools. NARRATIVE: Action for Healthy Kids® fights childhood obesity, undernourishment and physical inactivity by helping schools become healthier places so kids can live healthier lives. We partner with a legion of dedicated volunteers - teachers, students, moms, dads, school wellness experts and more to create healthful school changes. We believe that everyone has a part to play in ending the nation’s childhood obesity epidemic. We provide programs and services and lead advocacy efforts in school.

Healthy School Environment Smart Fundraising 3/12/2015 Healthy School Environment NARRATIVE: How do we put the success equation in action? One area that we at Action for Healthy Kids work hard to improve is the school environment. There are many opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy behaviors in schools, and this is where students learn about nutrition and healthy eating, physical activity, and chronic health conditions. Action for Healthy Kids works with schools to align what they are teaching with the health practices in the school. In particular, how schools support student activities and foster a healthy school environment. A healthy school environment includes nutrition education, nutritious school foods, daily opportunities to be physically active, programs to promote wellness, healthy fundraising and school wide support of these efforts. Action for Healthy Kids state teams work directly with school staff, parents and students. Nationally, we provide grants, technical assistance and resources to schools to help achieve healthier school environments. We host webinars and in-person trainings, and work with many partners to achieve success. Action for Healthy Kids Wellness Policy Tool AFHK Resources NARRATIVE: Resources on the AFHK page. We provide resources to help teachers, parents and health professionals in their work to promote healthy behaviors. This includes materials, tool kits, technical assistance and financial grants. We have state coordinators in 23 states to assist grantee schools and provide additional support. We also are developing an interactive wellness policy tool for use by district wellness committees and school health teams. www.Actionforhealthykids.org

Registration and log in is required to use the tool. Seven Steps to Success NARRATIVE: As part of our technical assistance, AFHK is committed to helping you through the wellness policy process. Let’s take a look at the AFHK wellness policy tool. It is available online, at www.actionforhealthykids.org. Go to the tools for school tab, then click on the wellness policy tool link. Registration and log in is required. The tool has seven steps, and imbedded in each step are pertinent resources to help users be successful at each step. This tool can be used independently by schools and districts and also in state or regional training settings. 7

Here is a snapshot of the complete tool graphic, including the branching out discussion icons for trainings. Each step in this tool identifies key areas to focus effort, and offers tips for success. This is a cyclical process, with options to move through the steps based on district need. Trainings on a table top wellness policy tool and the resources are coming soon, and are part of the AFHK outreach.

This report demonstrates that physical activity supports academic achievement, well-nourished kids learn better, and that healthier practices in schools can increase school revenue. The report is a roadmap for parents, educators, school administrators and school volunteers to create healthier school environments so the kids in their lives are better positioned to learn. We are starting with our grant funded schools with the online assessment, and will be sharing reports with our schools.
