The broad spectrum of different ways to rule… Types Of Governments The broad spectrum of different ways to rule…

The Broad Spectrum A government can range from not having any leaders…. To having everyone be a leader…. With everything in between… Confusing, right?

Anarchy An anarchy is where there are no leaders Generally, this causes great chaos and there is no order at all

Governments ruled by one leader Autocracy: Ruled by one leader – there are two types A dictatorship is where one single person rules completely and tells everyone what to do. Usually requires the use of the military to enforce the dictator’s will Examples??

Governments ruled by one leader In a monarchy, there is a King or Queen where the power is usually inherited Power is passed down through the family Often, leadership is tied to religion or ceremony

Governments ruled by few leaders Oligarchy – type of government ruled by a small group Can be determined by socio-economic status, race, gender, or some other “birth right” Government policies are usually designed to protect the interests of this small group There are 2 types…

Types of Oligarchies Aristocracy – government ruled by the privileged class, usually determined by wealth Government policies are designed to protect the interests of this small group, the aristocrats

Types of Oligarchies Communism – government combined with an economic system where the means of production are controlled by the state, and there is no private property Small group controls the policies with the goal to protect the interests of the entire society The idea is that working together will benefit the whole society

Governments with many leaders A Democracy is where is there is rule by all, or self-rule. The power is within the people This is where all people are involved in the decisions of the government There are two types…

Types of Democracy A republic is where the citizens elect representatives to make decisions in government for them. A direct democracy allows every citizen to vote directly on all government and policy decisions The number of voters is limited to who qualifies as a citizen Romans Greeks

The Oddball Governments A theocracy is ruled by a single or few religious leaders, where government and religion are tied together Usually very little tolerance for other religions Doesn’t work with democracy, where all citizens are supposed to be equal

The Oddball Governments A bureaucracy breaks down the tasks of the government into different departments or bureaus As society continues to grow, government work becomes overwhelming, so this makes government more efficient
