Young Leader Training Module A prepare for take-off! Use this first section to talk about the young leader scheme. What is the scheme, what do they have to do, what can they get from the scheme. Don’t go into much detail about the missions as we will discuss this at later just a brief overview. Speak to the young leaders and as them about their experiences in scouting and is they had young leaders when they were in the junior sections/ what did they think of them….

Objectives: Understand the way local Scouting works. Understand the purpose and methods of Scouting. Explain the role of the young leader for the section you help with. It’s always good to start with objectives so we know what we are going to be doing for the session. Talk through the objectives and remember to revisit them at the end to see if we have achieved everything. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Objectives: Understand how the child protection applies to you. Understand the purpose and effects of POR on you as a Young Leader. Explain why it is important to provide activities safely and with it is necessary to carry out risk assessments. Understand how The Young Leaders’ Scheme works and how to access further training LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Local Scouting Structure: Behind every great team there is a strong structure so here is ours. Talk them through the positions the young people do not need to know every task but a brief overview of what each role entails and who carried them out within the district. You could have some pictures here as a who’s who. Guess the face for the role etc…. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

PURPOSE OF SCOUTING: In groups of 3-4 discuss and write down: What have you done in Scouting? What’s your greatest achievement in scouting? What is the purpose of scouting? These questions will help to get the young people talking and discussing what they have done within Scouting. Share your own answers to the group before they start discussing the answers, this will help to aid discussion.   Purpose of Scouting To help young people achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local national and international communities Promise On my honour, I promise that I will do my best, to do my duty to God and to the Queen, to help other people and to keep the Scout Law (Note alternative Promises which are available) https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=178&v=beWsc5kPwbc this video can be shown for this section too LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

“The most worth-while thing is to try to put happiness into the lives of others.” Robert Baden-Powell Take this for some reflection and to discuss the principles of Scouting,

Role of the Leader: In groups of 3-4 discuss and write down what you have done as a young leader. What should you be doing as a young leader? Pick three words that you would use to describe your time as a young leader. You should act like a role model when you are being a young leader, integrity, Respect, Care, Belief , Co-orperation are all fundamental for young leaders. These words are linked to the values of scouting. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Child Protection: In groups of 3-4 discuss and write down: What you think child protection is and how it can affect you as a leader. What is safeguarding? How safeguarding can affect you as a young leader? Make sure you cover the following points during this discussion: During any Scouting activity we must think about the interests and wellbeing of young people We must respect their rights, wishes and feelings All adults in Scouting are responsible for putting this policy into practice at all times This means that we must ensure that our behaviour is appropriate at all times • We must also observe the rules established for the safety and security of young people and always follow the procedures for reporting The Anti-Bullying policy is there to help develop a caring and supportive atmosphere, where bullying in any form is unacceptable All leaders must take action to deal with bullying behaviour when it occurs and allow young people to talk about any concerns they may have We must encourage young people and adults to feel comfortable and caring enough to point out attitudes or behaviour they do not like LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Child Protection and Safeguarding: In your groups create a code of conduct for young leaders, you’ll have 5 minutes to do this. This should be what they expect from their leaders and what they leaders would expect from young leaders. Things like no foul language, be prompt for meetings etc… After the young leaders have created their own rules and shared them with the group it would be a good opportunity to introduce the orange card. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Child Protection and Safeguarding: The orange card what is it? Ensure young people are kept safe Being a role model to other young people Behaving appropriately at all times Reporting any concerns The orange card is designed for young leaders, it is called the Young People Frist- Guidance for Young Leaders. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Child Protection and Safeguarding: Listening to Young People Child Protection scenarios Stay calm Listen to what the YP says exactly Reassure the YP they are going to be alright Let the YP know that you’ll treat what they said seriously, but that you have to tell another adult leader Immediately tell an adult leader Immediately take note of the facts and give them to the same leader LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

POR: What is POR? Policy, Organisation and Rules Why do we have rules? What rules do you come across in your every day lives? School Sport Home POR is the rules, guidance for scouting, it allows the Leaders to find information related to their section, activity LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Safety: What is a Hazard: “an unavoidable danger or risk, even though often foreseeable” (Oxford English Dictionary 2016) What is a Risk: “exposure to the chance of injury or loss; a hazard or dangerous chance” (Oxford English Dictionary 2016) It is important to fully understand the difference between Hazard and Risk. Get the young people to talk about what they think the differences are between a risk and a hazard. They should come up with a few examples for each. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Hand out the sheet and get the young leaders to identify all of the hazards on the sheet then you can do it as a completion person who finds all of the hazards wins a prize. Talk the young leaders through the different hazards that are on the page and explain why they can cause harm.

Safety: Risk assessment: A method of identifying and assessing the risk of a particular activity. Talk to the young leaders about the importance of carrying out risk assessments and why we use them. Speak about dynamic risk assessments and how they are used during meetings in and out of the hall. Give a few examples of dynamic risk assessments and how they are used in every day life also. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE This is an example of the risk assessment form that the Scout Association use for any activity. Talk the leaders through the risk assessment and how it is filled in. The scenario is talking your beaver colony for a bike ride.   Remember young leaders should never be left responsible for completing the risk assessment for any activity. Young leaders can be talked through the form and supported by an adult leader but main responsibility lies with the adult leaders. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

The young leader scheme has 10 modules and 4 missions that have to be completed to gain your young leader award. The 4 missions are delivered and evaluated by the section leader then sent to the ESL (YL). Mission 1 Task – run a variety of games: indoor, outdoor or as part of a camp (minimum of three). Mission-2 Task – plan and run an activity (not a game) as part of either the section programme or a camp programme. Mission 3 Task – to take the section’s programme ideas to a programme planning meeting. Mission 4 Task – responsibility for organising and running part of the section programme. Now module A is complete young leaders should be awarded with the young leader badge and woggle.

Objectives: Understand the way local Scouting works. Understand the purpose and methods of Scouting. Explain the role of the young leader for the section you help with. Recap on the objectives and ask the young leaders if they have any questions. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Objectives: Understand how the child protection applies to you. Understand the purpose and effects of POR on you as a Young Leader. Explain why it is important to provide activities safely and with it is necessary to carry out risk assessments.
