Square The term square has many meanings. It refers to a: Tool Specific four-sided shape 90-degree relationship between two things Type of measurement called square measure

Square A Square is a tool.

Square A Square is a four-sided shape. Has sides of equal length Has all interior angles of 90 degrees A square is a specific rectangle EQUAL LENGTHS EQUAL ANGLES

Square Things are said to be square if they form a 90-degree or right angle.

Square Consider two boards. When one is moved so they make a right angle, they become square with each other.

FRAMING SQUARE TABLES AND SCALES

Framing Square Tongue L-shaped metal tool Blade or Body Heel

Framing Square Framing Square is a centuries-old tool. It contains a wealth of information. Measuring Scales; eighths to hundredths Rafter tables Octagon scale Brace scale Board-foot table

Framing Square It serves as a calculating aid for all types of carpentry work. Today, the tables and scales can be replaced with a calculator and an understanding of carpentry theory. But the information is still useful.

Measuring Scales Inch markings are broken into these different scales Twelfths Scales include Eighths Sixteenths Tenths Twelfths Hundredths Hundredths Tenths Sixteenths Inch markings are broken into these different scales

Essex Board Foot Table Under the 10 for 1 × 10 14′ long Provides the number of board feet (bdft) of lumber in various sizes. Table assumes 1× boards and is read from the center of the table under the 12. Read the board length under the 12 Read the board width under the larger numbers above. Under the 10 for 1 × 10 14′ long 11 8/12 bdft For example, find the board feet of a 1 × 10 – 14′

Brace Scale Provides the diagonal measure for braces of various sizes. If the horizontal and vertical measurements are 30, Then the diagonal is 42.43. 30 Brace 30 42.43

Rafter Tables Six rows of information are provided for building a roof.

Conclusions Framing square has: A lot of information. Scales for measuring and estimating. Tables of information to save calculation time. Large sides for accurate squaring objects.

The Kerf

The Kerf Cutting boards removes part of the board. This is where sawdust comes from We must account for this kerf when we are laying out our projects. Typically saw blades will leave a 1/8” Kerf. Space your lines at least 1/8” apart Always cut on the “waste side” of the line
