WHO WE ARE Ethnicity Findings Hispanic students are significantly overrepresented in the Basic Skills population (40%) compared to their population in the overall credit population (32%) White Non-Hispanic students are underrepresented in the basic skills population (12%) compared to their proportion in the overall credit population (18%).

WHO WE ARE Math Basic Skills Projected Needs & Actual Enrollment Fall Terms for FTIC Percents 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 NEEDED 19.1 15.6 14.7 16.7 14.5 ACTUAL 3.7 3.8 3.2 3.3 3.0 In Fall 2007, 84% of 5,596 new students took a placement exam in math and either English or ESL to determine their skill level and the courses for which they were prepared. Of the 4,691 students who took at least one test 1,570 ( 33.5%) placed into pre-and beginning algebra.

BSI NEEDS – LOOMING CRISIS 75% of incoming students place into basic skills courses (Math, English, ESL) Only 26% of these students will get a seat in a basic skills course Of these, only 10% of the basic skills math students will succeed in the next level of math within the next year Only 21% of the basic skills math students will reach transfer math level within 6 years.
