Facilitation «do’s» and «dont’s»! In your groups: Discuss and agree on 3 top do’s of facilitation (Table 1 &2) – use green sticky notes Discuss and agree on 3 top dont’s of facilitation (Table 3, 4 & 5) – use pink sticky notes You have 10 minutes!

‘Questions’ Paraphrase for the audience Ask the person who asked the question to clarify, if needed Throw the question back at your audience: - the participants - the one who asked the question! If you do not know the answer, say so!

Would someone like to answer this question? ‘Questions’ Make the link between yours and your audience answers Make the link between your answer and your presentation Use anecdotes, examples, stories Would someone like to answer this question? Answer back to all participants, not directly to the one who asked you the question!

Use closed questions (yes/no answers) to redirect/summarise: Use open questions: “Who? Why? What? When? How?” Use closed questions (yes/no answers) to redirect/summarise: “Were you trying to say…?” “ Let me see if I understood you right, you mean… “

Use questions focused on your audience: How do YOU understand this point? Why is this important for YOU? Tell us more about YOUR experience with...? And also.......Why?........How......?

Feedback Help participants reflect on the learning by using the following type of questions: 1. What have you done well e.g. in the exercise? What would you improve? What would you need to improve? What challenges did you face during the exercise? What is your plan of action to apply the learning back at your work?

1 Draw on participants’ knowledge Facilitation 1 Draw on participants’ knowledge Encourage quieter participants to engage Control “over-enthusiasm” Highlight relevant points shared Build on suggestions “De-personalize” issues Welcome participants’ experience sharing

2 Seek consensus, stress commonalities Facilitation 2 Seek consensus, stress commonalities Identify points of agreement Highlight commonalities in contributions Link those back to the content of your session/workshop

3 Foster critical thinking Facilitation 3 Foster critical thinking Challenge groups with dilemmas Use scenarios to trigger thinking
