Measuring Weight

Standards and Essential Questions M4M1. Students will understand the concept of weight and how to measure weight. Use standard and metric units to measure the weight of objects. Know units used to measure weight (gram, kilogram, ounces, pounds, and tons). Compare one unit to another within a single system of measurement.

What is Weight?

What are the Standard Units (customary units) used to measure weight? Ounce – a toy car weighs about one ounce Pound – a remote control car weighs about one pound Ton – a full size car weighs about one ton

Standard or Customary Units Ounce – oz. Use ounces to measure objects that weigh less than a pound. 16 ounces equals 1 pound.

Standard or Customary Units You would use ounces to measure the weight of a spider. The spider weighs 2 oz.

Standard or Customary Units Pound – lb. Use pounds to measure objects that weigh less than a ton, but more than an ounce. 2,000 pounds equals 1 ton.

Standard or Customary Units You would use pounds to measure the weight of the rooster. The rooster weighs 4 lb.

Standard or Customary Units Ton – T Use tons to weigh objects that weigh more than 2,000 pounds 1 T (ton) equals 2,000 lbs (pounds)

Standard or Customary Units You would use tons to measure the weight of an elephant. About how much does the elephant weigh?

Standard or Customary Units About how much does the elephant weigh? Write down your predication. A. 1 T B. 3 T C. 6 T

Standard or Customary Units According to the digital scale at the National Zoo in Washington D.C…… 5962 lb

About how much does the elephant weigh? Remember 2,000 lbs equals 1 T If each ton equals 2,000 lbs you would first round 5,962 and then divide by 2,000. Round: 5,962 ?

About how much does the elephant weigh? Since 5,962 lb rounds to 6,000 lbs we would divide

Standard or Customary Units About how much does the elephant weigh? A. 1 T B. 3 T C. 6 T

Standard or Customary Units To practice using Standard or Customary measurement: -Use your book, page 339, and select the most reasonable unit for the objects. -Watch a movie
