The Role of the TA Learning support assistants must know their role and how they fit into the planning of the lesson. Effective liaison time with class teacher for planning and feedback. Have all your resources at hand. Be prepared to annotate. Feedback outcomes. Must be effective and have measured impact. Work effectively as part of a valued team.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT ENJOY AND ACHIEVE If removing individuals or groups of children from the classroom ensure the learning environment inspires learning. Multi-sensory learning, visual prompts around the room, Thrass charts, Scuba fans. ICT Mind mapping/post it notes/ Make learning FUN!

KEEP TO THE PLAN When delivering interventions remember fidelity to the programme. Give effective feedback to the class teacher and other professionals when required and how and when this will be done. TA’s can work with higher ability groups, allowing the class teacher to work with individuals and small groups. Ask open questions and allow children processing time. Complexity question cards.

NO TO THE VELCRO TEACHING ASSISTANT Support students by giving them the space and time to become independent learners. Don’t allow children to become dependent on adults within the classroom. Our role is to develop and nurture, building self- esteem, confidence and independence. Reminding and prompting students to use the appropriate strategies to enable them to problem solve. Don’t say NO!

Scaffolding The right amount of support at the right time

Training and Professional Development Performance Management will identify training needed. Mentoring from LATA’s . TA Networks. Share strategies, knowledge, experience and model vocabulary. Peer observations and SLT observations. Sharing good practice. Be reflective.

WHY ARE YOU VITAL IN DELIVERING OUTCOMES? You have close working relationships with children. You have excellent opportunities to observe children closely. You have additional skills and knowledge which enhances the school’s provision for its young people. You can observe what type of learning style helps individual students. You are aware of the goals and have vision.
