2 WHAT IS TEACHING ? The best approach to understanding the nature of teaching is establishing a harmonious relationship between teacher, student and subject . Teaching is the activity of facilitating learning. Effectiveness in teaching does not relate to teacher’s age, sex, and teaching experience.

3 Microteaching Dr. Allen and his group evolved Microteaching in 1963 in America.

4 Definition of Microteaching
Microteaching is a system of controlled practice that makes it possible to concentrate on specific teaching behavior and practice under controlled condition . - Allen & Eve Micro teaching is a teacher education technique, which allows teacher to apply clearly defined teaching skill to carefully prepared lesson in a planned series of five to ten minutes , eccounters with a small group of five to ten pupils, of ten within an opportunity to observe the result on video tape . - Buch

5 What is Microteaching ? Teaching of a small unit of content to the small group of students ( 6-10 number ) in a small amount of time ( 5 to 10 min. ) To train inexperience student- teachers for acquiring teaching skills. To improve the skills of experience teachers.

8 Characteristics of Microteaching
Duration of teaching as well as number of students are less. Content is divided into smaller units. Only one teaching skill considered at a time. Provision of immediate feedback. In micro teaching cycle, there is facility of re- planning, re-teaching , and re-evaluation, All the fault of teacher are observed. The problem of discipline can also be controlled.

9 Comparison between Micro Teaching and Traditional Teaching
Class consist of 40 to 60 students. The teacher practices several skills at a time. The duration is 40 to 45 Min. Immediate feed-back is not available. Micro Teaching Class consist of small group of 6 to 10 students. The Teacher takes up one skill at a time. Duration of time for teaching is 5 to 7 Min. There is immediate feed-back.

Linking with past experience. Link between introduction and main parts. Use of appropriate devices / techniques like questioning examples etc.

Probing questions are those which help the pupils to think in depth about the various aspects of the problem. By asking such questions again, the teacher makes the pupil more thoughtful. Enable the pupil to understand the subject deeply.

14 3. Skill of Explanation It involves the ability of a teacher to describe logically ‘HOW’ , ‘ Why’ and ‘What’ of concept Precautions for skill of Explaining: In simple language. Should not be given the shape of an advice. Should be in a sequence. Should be according to the age, experience & mental level of the pupils.

Teacher movement. Teachers gestures. Change in voice. Focusing. Change in the interaction pattern. Pausing. Student’s physical participation.

It is used in various forms in case of micro teaching by the supervisor, video- tape, films, TV , which are various source of feedback.

It focuses sharpening and developing specific teaching skills and eliminating errors. It enables understanding behaviors important in class-room teaching. It increases the confidence of the learner teacher. It is a vehicle of continues training for both beginners and for senior teachers. It provides experts supervision and constructive feedback.

Audience …. Small group of peers. Feedback given by peers playing as students. Participants learn about strength and weakness in themselves as teachers. Plan strategies for improvmentin performance.
