Introduction to Coaching Skills for Senior School Leaders 23rd November 2017

To enable participants to: Workshop Aims To enable participants to: - Identify the key challenges to maximising staff performance Understand the key role that coaching can play in maximising the performance of self and others Practice key coaching skills Find out what steps can be taken to deepen their coaching skills and practice

Where do you want to get to? What needs to be overcome? Workshop Overview Where are you now? Where do you want to get to? What needs to be overcome?

Getting the best out of our time together? What will you need from yourself? What will you need from others? What will you need from me?

Where are you now?

Staff Performance: Key Challenges? When it comes to raising and maintaining high levels of staff performance what have been the three biggest challenges that you/your school has faced? What has been the mental/psychological impact? What has been the emotional impact? What has been the combined impact on your levels of performance?

Performance Management: Self Analysis Questions for reflection? Re: How well does your system support you as a leader in being able to develop skill and expertise in: Asking high level qu’s i.e. the ones that really cause a shift in thinking and perception? Ones that get to the root of the issue? Listening for meaning and being able to identify helpful and unhelpful patterns in teachers responses and behaviours Being comfortable with a wide range of emotions and being able to respond accordingly Ensuring that the teachers/staff members takes ownership of targets and agreed individual and organisational goals?

Performance Management: Self Analysis 5. Challenge Individuals to move out of their comfort zones: having the skill to work with individuals in such a way that they recognise when they need to change or adopt a new way of being/working in order to facilitate their own forward growth and the growth of other areas of school life 6. Managing your own emotions: Being able to recognise the impact that your emotions have upon you and the way in which you lead and manage others 7. Building others confidence and self esteem: Knowing how to work with others so that they learn from both successes and failures and develop a healthy self esteem which is translated into a positive attitude to both work and others 8. Indentifying others’ self limiting beliefs: Being able to identify the phrases and patterns in language that point to individuals belief patterns and thought processes that may prevent them from achieving their best

What does the shape of your wheel reveal to you? Self Analysis Complete wheel What does the shape of your wheel reveal to you? Share with a colleague

Where do you want to get to?

Reflection Questions What do you want to change re your approach to maximising staff performance? Why do you want to make these changes? What is the likely outcome for yourself/pupils if the situation doesn’t change? What would be the benefits if the situation could be changed?

‘To Listen’

Listening …. To be active listeners, individuals should: Give the speaker full attention Encourage the speaker to keep talking Not break into conversation by sharing ‘war stories’ on their own experience Not give advice Listen as well for what is not said and for what is important to the speaker Ref: Coaching Leadership: Jan Robertson

How? Use the post-its to construct a model for a coaching conversation that will enable a person to get from where they are now to where they want to be.

Coaching methodologies (in reality it is often less linear and more like this!) Topic Will Goal Options Reality 15

To maximise staff performance we need knowledge of … Ourselves Others Communication processes

Self & Others ‘ For a leader to be successful, it is necessary to have good awareness of self. Only then can the leader begin to build an awareness of others.’

We have to master the art of good communication because … “ Working with someone who shuts out feedback or responds with defensiveness and arguments is exhausting. We walk on eggshells and live in fear of pointless conflicts. Frank discussion fades and feedback goes unspoken, depriving the “receiver” of the chance to understand what’s gone wrong or fix it.”
