Quaestio: What monetary, marital, and martial factors led to both the growth and decline of Spanish power? Nunc Agenda: Using the infographic on page 506, explain and describe how King Philip II of Spain used each of the following “tools” to build Spanish power.

Spain Review Ferdinand and Isabella completed the conquest of Spain from the Spanish Muslims and began the Spanish Monarchy Also financed the voyage of Columbus Spain gained many colonies in the Americas which brought enormous amounts of gold and silver into Spain

Charles I... or Charles V Grandparents were Ferdinand and Isabella, Duchess of Burgundy, and Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Became ruler of Spain (and all its colonies), Southern Italy, the Netherlands, and the Holy Roman Empire! Fought against Protestantism in the German states, and fought Sultan Suleiman and the Ottoman Empire Oversaw the Spanish colonization of the Americas

Transfer of Power Too much power for Charles Gave Holy Roman Empire to his brother Ferdinand Gave Spain and the rest to his son Philip II, who became an absolute ruler (ruler with complete control over government and people) claiming divine right (right to rule from God)

Defender of the Church Supported the Catholic Church and fought against Protestantism with __________________________ 1571- Defeated the Ottomans in the Mediterranean Protestants in the Netherlands revolted against rule by Philip II Queen Elizabeth of England supported the Dutch, became enemy of Philip II She encouraged English sea captains to rob Spanish ships and attack Spanish colonies in the Americas

Spanish Armada Spain confidently assembled a 130-ship fleet, the Spanish Armada, to invade England England’s smaller, faster ships, superior cannons, and “flaming ship” strategy gave them victory over Spain Spain’s defeat marked a change in naval warfare, from the old ramming attack style to the new gunpowder weapon style
