Learning and Teaching Conference 2017 Re-imagining Teaching Excellence 27 March 2017 Professor Suzanne Cholerton Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) 27 March 2017

THANK YOU You represent those people whose commitment to the educational experience is significant and play a key role in the success the university has in the quality of the education provided and the quality of the students who graduate from NU. So thank you for all you do for this important university agenda.

Current measures NSS 2016 – 90% (12th; 2nd = RG) ISB 2016 – 94% (3/10 RG; 5/42 UK) THE Student Experience Survey 2017 – 8th PTES – 86% - 85% - 84% PRES – 83% in 2013 & 2015 Slide reflects our performance in various student satisfaction and /or experience surveys. As you can see we are generally doing very well but these measures of the quality of educational experience are changing. THE 4th in RG

But our familiar metrics are changing . . . . Teaching Excellence is the new measure But what does it mean? TEF has defined Teaching Excellence in a particular way: Provision considered under three Aspects (metrics and provider submission) Teaching Quality Learning Environment Student Outcomes and Learning Gain For UG only At institutional level World rankings as a proxy for quality TEF medal as the new indicator of quality?

The environment continues to change…. Externally Not only institutional TEF but the very real prospect of subject TEF Higher Education and Research Bill (HERB) Other Government initiatives Brexit/Trump/UKVI restrictions Internally Our student demographic is shifting Students expectations/study habits/needs are changing Competing priorities for staff

Maintaining the quality of our offer Continued focus on staff recruitment, development and parity New programmes and different modes of delivery Technology-enhanced learning Engaging with national initiatives A focus beyond UG and the Newcastle campus Capital projects/acquisitions/ refurbishments Resetting the vision for NU’s Educational Experience

THANK YOU
