Dewey Decimal Classification System Presented to 6th – 8th Grade

All categories of books or stories can be called either fiction or non-fiction. A made up story Can tell about things that could happen Is read for fun Characters may be like real people or imaginary NON-FICTION Has facts that can be checked and proven The author is an expert on this information.

FICTION OR NON-FICTION Story is created from the author’s imagination Stories are pretend Animals or objects can talk, wear clothes, have jobs People in the story can do things people cannot really do Story might have funny pictures

LOCATING NON-FICTIONAL BOOKS IN THE MEDIA CENTER Non-fictional books are arranged in the media center according to the DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM! Non-Fictional books are located in the “well” of the media center.

WHAT IS THE DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM? The Dewey Decimal System is a classification system that organizes information into ten general subject areas. The purpose of the Dewey System is to make it easy for people to locate materials in the library and on shelves.

Who created the Dewey Decimal Classification System? Melvil Dewey was born on December 10, 1851 Melvil Dewey created the number order system for library books when he was 21 years old. Melvil Dewey started the first school for librarians.

Ten Main Classifications in Dewey’s System The world’s knowledge is divided into 10 categories or groups. Each group has a main title and is represented by three numbers.
