Outline/Aims To understand what facilitation is and how to apply facilitation techniques in your role as a PASS Leader. To understand the different styles of leadership and how this relates to facilitation. To practise using strategy's cards to support facilitation. 11.21am -11.22am Go through session aims and remind them to try and get points. How do you think these statements apply to being a PASS leader? 5. Does aspiration match reality? If not, what are the barriers? 6 .What are your aspirations in the context of these statements? 11.22am-11.30am Ask students to turn to page 17 in their workbook and they will find leadership quotes. Explain that students in groups of 3/4 on tables will take it in turns to roll the die and that corresponds to a question on the PowerPoints. Give them a moment to read the quotes, then ask them to start playing. Bring everyone back together near the end and hear some of their points… You’ve heard of the golden rule, haven’t you? Whoever has the gold makes the rules. A true leader is one who is humble enough to admit their mistakes. Leading means running fast enough to keep ahead of your people. Leadership is action, not position. A team is the reflection of its leadership. Leaders do not create followers they create more leaders. As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others. Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.  First rule of leadership – everything is your fault.  You’re not a leader until you have been elected.  If people can hear you, then you are a leader.  One of the most important leadership lessons is realising you’re not the most important or the most intelligent person in the room at all times.  Leaders listen and respond to those around them.  A leader stands alone.   ‘Dice questions’- Peer Support Introduction Activities Leadership

Hear a few peoples responses then discuss how they are followers of the PASS scheme, but they will be leaders when they have their first session and it up to them to treat their attendees with respect and nurture them and treat them equally in order to make them follow you. It important that you discuss the power balance and that by nurturing and giving people a voice you are giving them power, which makes them want to follow you but also become a leader one day! Facilitation What is facilitation? Strategy card number 29: Visuals What is facilitation? Why is it important for students’ learning in PASS? 11.42-11.50 Ask one student on tables to act as the facilitator/leader. Explain that have to split their group into two, read strategy card number 29, give each group 5 minutes to do activity answering the questions on the board, then spend the last 5 minutes discussing what people did. Flipchart paper and pens on tables – Support those that are unsure what to do. Each group will discuss together, not as a whole group! #PASSBrighton

What is facilitation and what techniques will help you in your role as a PASS Leader? Strategy card number 21: Jigsaw Write notes in your workbook to refer back to. 11.50am-12.10pm Explain that on your tables you are going to be using strategy card number 21: Jigsaw. This strategy involves everyone reading a bit of information and then sharing that information with the group (so not everyone has to read everything!!). It can be adapted that perhaps you assign each person in a group a maths questions to solve or something to research then you all come back together and share information etc. Hand out conducting sessions sheets. In groups of 5/6 you will each read an assigned sections, pick out the key points and they share with the rest of your group. Someone will volunteer to lead this, you have until 12.10 to complete this activity. – make sure you write notes in workbook! #PASSBrighton
