Unit 2: The Umayyads Objective In this unit, we are going to learn about the Middle East during the time of the Umayyad Caliphate

Lesson 1: Knowing the Past Objective Learn how to collect historical evidence.

Lesson 1: Knowing the Past New Words Artifacts: Things that people make or build Rashidun: rightly guided. Caliphate: an Islamic form of government Caliph: The leader of a Caliphate Timeline: a graphical representation of a period of time Descended from: coming from the same family, sharing the same ancestor. Ancestor: a person who is one more remote from the grandparent.

The Umayyads built buildings in Damascus such as the Great Umayyad Mosque that is still used today.
