Remote Sensing, GPS, GIS

GPS

GPS The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S.-owned utility that provides users with positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services. This system consists of three segments: the space segment, the control segment, and the user segment. The U.S. Air Force develops, maintains, and operates the space and control segments.

Remote Sensing

Remote Sensing Sensing information from outside or a distant point with no contact. we use it all the time involves the use of instruments or sensors to "capture" the spectral and spatial relations of objects and materials observable at a distance from above

From Satellite scan to digital image!

How do we use remote sensing: There are probably hundreds of applications – examples include: determining the status of a growing crop; defining urban patterns; delineating the extent of flooding; recognizing rock types; pinpointing areas of deforestation

comparative height of forest canopy elements.

the actual height of forest canopy elements.

A detailed picture of a coastal community taken by a remote sensing device. Images such as this one can be used to prepare for hazardous events such as hurricanes or floods.

GIS

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing feature events on earth. allows you to link databases and maps to create dynamic displays. Remote sensed imagery is integrated within a GIS.
