Presentation transcript:

Fifth Grade Newsletter Lupton/Quinones August 21-25, 2017 Grammar Reading Your child will focus on the study of subordinating conjunctions this week in Grammar. A subordinating conjunction connects a dependent clause (a clause that cannot be written as a separate sentence) with an independent clause (sentence). Common subordinating conjunctions are; although, as, after, before, because, if, while, when, while, since, then, unless, and until. Example sentences: We celebrated after we won the game. Because our train was delayed, we arrived late. Watson listened quietly while Holmes explained his theory. Your child will take a test over coordinating and subordinating conjunctions on Friday. Math Your child will continue to review powers of ten, order of operations, writing numerical expressions, and place value. He/she will have a Math test over the material on Wednesday, Aug. 23rd . He/she received a study guide for this test last week. After the test, students will begin his/her study of multiplication. He/she will be working towards multiplying 3-4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers. We continue to drill multiplication facts at school, however if your child is not strong in this area they need to make a plan to practice at home as well. Students who are fluent in multiplication facts will be much more confident and successful with the more difficult problems faced in 5th grade curriculum. We will continue reading Steal Away Home by Lois Ruby. Students will continue the study of theme. Your child will also learn how to identify the point of view of a text. He/she will continue studying and working with the vocabulary words for Chapters 1-14. Accelerated Reader testing has begun for the year. Students are asked to earn at least 1 point per week. This can consist of 2 half point books or 1 chapter book worth one point. Please encourage your child to read independently each day. Science Your child will be continuing his/her study of Physical Science. He/she received a study guide for Physical Science Unit 1 last week. The test date for this study guide has changed to Tuesday, August 29th. Social Studies Word Study Your child will learn how voting rights were protected by the 15th, 19th, 23rd, 24th, and 26th amendments. We will review the rights and responsibilities of a citizen, due process of law, and the amendment process as well. Please encourage your child to study for the Unit 1: Civic Understandings test on tomorrow, August 23rd. Your child will be reviewing long vowel sounds this week Schedule Wed., August 23 – Math Test; Unit 1 Social Studies Test Thur., August 24th – Fall Pictures (non-uniform) Tue., August 29th - Science Test
