Antonella Fresa Technical Coordinator EGI Community Forum 2012 DCH-RP Digital Cultural Heritage Roadmap for Preservation Antonella Fresa Technical Coordinator

DCH-RP Digital Cultural Heritage Roadmap for Preservation is a Coordination Action supported by EC FP7 e-Infrastructures Programme The project is under negotiation and is expected to start in October 2012 It will last 2 years It includes 13 partners: 5 national authorities in the cultural heritage sector, 3 European associations 4 e-infrastructure providers 1 sme

The Digital Cultural Heritage sector The amount of digitised material is growing very rapidly National, regional and European programmes support the digitisation of the content of Museums, Libraries, Archives, Archaeological sites and Audiovisual repositories The generation of digital cultural heritage is accelerated also by the impulse of Europeana that is fostering the European cultural institutions to produce even more digital content Digital cultural heritage content are complex and interlinked through many relations Metadata play an enormous role in the management of cultural heritage data and the use of metadata standards is very important

THE VISION Data Continuum NATIONAL PROGRAMMES REGIONAL PROGRAMMES Digital cultural content EUROPEAN PROGRAMMES National portals International portals Regional portals National portals Thematic portals …….. Final users

Scientific challenges High quality information technology management, to ensure trust, accessibility, reliability, security, long term safety and sustainability of content; Enhanced access facilities exploiting semantic connections, providing services to: final users (the researchers) searching into the e-Infrastructure cultural institutions delivering data to the e-Infrastructure; Advanced interoperability protocols : among existing cultural heritage repositories and cross-discipline link with data from other scientific domains.

Compute and data technology requirements Storage resources for hosting cultural repositories & cloud services for small institutions Quality control and data integrity check AAI to manage IPR and security issues Long-term digital preservation Semantic layer to process data links, intelligent user profiling and adaptivity of content to contexts Enhanced visualisation techniques (3D and virtual environments)

DCH-RP Scope

DCH-RP Objectives (1/2) To design a Roadmap implementation of an e-Infrastructure for preservation of DCH content Such infrastructure is part of a wider vision towards and Open Science Infrastructure for DCH in 2020 This will be a federation of existing infrastructures: national infrastructures (NRENs, NGIs), joint European activities/initiatives (e.g. EGI), European data infrastructures (e.g. EUDAT and SCIDIP-ES), research infrastructures (e.g. DARIAH, CLARIN, DASISH), the commercial sector (e.g. commercial cloud services)

DCH-RP Objectives (2/2) Network of common interest and wide dissemination campaign Proof of concept to validate the Roadmap design within concrete use cases Sustainability models, involving the private sector Governance and stakeholders consultation International cooperation: Taiwan, India, Malawi, South America, USA, Med Countries

DCH-RP Cooperation An initial set of initiatives has been selected as target cooperation of DCH-RP: DC-NET, INDICATE, EG-INSPIRE, APARSEN, SCIDIP-ES, EU-DAT The project is open to more cooperation, with particular regard to the research infrastructures from the ESFRI Roadmap that are under establishment in the SSH sector (DARIAH, CLARIN, DASISH)

The role of NGIs EGI.eu is the WP Leader of Proof of Concept 2 iteration with the Roadmap design, to validate approaches, technical feasibility, organisational and operational issues, etc. 5 pilots in 5 countries: Italy (ICCU and INFN) Poland (PSNC) Hungary (NIIFI) Sweden (National Archives in cooperation with Sunet) Estonia (Ministry of Culture in cooperation with EENET)

Long term goals / short term wins Implementation of the research challenges from the DC-NET Joint Activities Plan and Service Priorities, through Joint Calls in the frame of the JPI Addressing the 1st priority of DC-NET: Roadmap for Preservation Implementation of e-infrastructure components (Horizon 2020 ) Experiments, pilots and proof of concept to validate theoretical approaches Establishment of DCH Virtual Research Community, with stakeholders sustain and committment Network of Common Interest established by DC-NET, INDICATE and to be continued in DCH-RP And to carry on cooperation with all the other regional, national, European and international initiatives in the DCH domain
