1 Introduction to EGI; Training activities and plans
Gergely Sipos Technical Outreach Manager EGI.eu / MTA SZTAKI 8/6/2018

2 European Grid Infrastructure
32 countries (National Grid Initiatives) Grid Federated IT services Infrastructure Computers, Data, Applications Clouds, clusters, grids,…. and beyond!! Sustainability Sustainable operation Project-driven innovation EGI-Engage, AARC, INDICO, etc. EGI.eu in Amsterdam E-Infrastructures are geographically distributed computing resources and data storage facilities linked by high-performance networks. They allow scientists to share information securely, analyse data efficiently and collaborate with colleagues worldwide. They are an essential part of modern scientific research and a driver for economic growth. The European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) was established in 2010 building on over a decade of investment by national governments and the European Commission. EGI is a European-wide federation of national computing and data storage resources. Its aim is to support cutting-edge research, innovation and knowledge transfer in Europe. EGI federates resources from various resource centres, mainly from research insitututes and universities. These centres provide computer clusters, storage servers, applications and human support services for secure access and sharing. EGI provides these services to European researchers and their international collaborators. EGI is coordinated by EGI.eu, a not-for-profit foundation based in Amsterdam and owned by EGI’s participants, the National Grid Infrastructures (NGIs).

3 Accelerating the implementation of the OSC vision
Researchers from all disciplines have easy, integrated and open access to the advanced digital services, scientific instruments, data, knowledge and expertise they need to collaborate to achieve excellence in science, research and innovation. Scientific Instruments Data Commons E-infrastr. Commons Knowledge Commons Competence Centres + Training on generic topics + Support for new communities OSC is an approach to sharing and governing advanced digital services, scientific instruments, data, knowledge and expertise that enables researchers to collaborate more easily and be more productive. Issues to tackle: Lack and/or incomplete roadmaps for research- and e-Infrastructures Fragmented solutions and policies for access to data and knowledge. Insufficient cooperation between public and private sector Lack of national and European organization between all stakeholders Many providers without a single market EGI-Engage 30 months, Start: 1/March/2015 43 partners 8 m Euro EC contribution

4 Competence Centres in EGI-Engage
Competence Centres in WP6 7 RIs from the ESFRI roadmap BBMRI, DARIAH, EISCAT_3D, ELIXIR, EPOS, INSTRUCT, LifeWatch 1 Asian Competence Centre for Disaster mitigation Goals Experiment with, develop and deploy community-specific ICT platforms Foster the sustainable adoption of e-infrastructure services Dissemination, training, exploitation within the RIs Implementation Scientific institutes + Software providers + Resource centres Few core partners and unfunded contributors Building on EGI solutions: Federated cloud, High Throughtput Computing, Federated operations

5 A example: DARIAH Competence Centre - architecture and activities
Outreach, training, user support Community Multi-Source Distributed Real-Time Search and Information Retrieval’ application (GWDG) Bavarian dialects dataset (AAS) New applications New datasets Apps. and data Workflow-based science gateway (Liferay) Technologies CDstar (GWDG) WS-PGRADE (SZTAKI) gLibrary (INFN) EGI infrastructure E-infrastructure Clouds and grids Federated resources from DARIAH centres

7 Training: How it’s done so far
Outreach NGI International Liaisons (country representatives) User Community Board (RI/community/project/CC reps.) Research Champions (EGI evangelists) Engagement Strategy ( Training F2F – EGI Conference, User Forum, NGI events Webinars A MOOC in 2014 (by SURFsara with guest speakers) Training Marketplace (Events, Materials, Resources, Uni. Courses) (User support) Applications Database (SW, VMs) Helpdesk (May be specific for the community) Topical support teams, Workshops

8 Training task in EGI-Engage: SA2. 1: https://wiki. egi
This task provides coordination to training activities across EGI, and a framework to develop, integrate and deliver training content and events customised for various audiences. The task will connect training activities of the CCs, NGIs and external projects, and will strive to maximise their effectiveness and impact across e-Infrastructure communities. A plan of join training activities with EUDAT will be defined at PM12 and PM24. The foundational services to be provided by the task are: Operating an up to date section in the EGI website about training events resources; Develop generic training content for customised courses prepared by CCs, NGIs and scientific communities; Contribute to the setup and delivery of tutorials at high-impact events organised by CCs, the NGIs, scientific communities and partner projects. Milestones and deliverables: M6.1 Joint training program for the first period is agreed SA2.1 Training M03 M6.5 Joint training program for the second period is agreed M15

9 EGI plans for training Standard training course about the Federated Cloud Tutorial at HPCS conference in Amsterdam (July) Tutorial for Harness Project in London (July) Domain-specific training environments on the EGI Federated Cloud Session at the EGI Conference (May 18-22) Joint training modules with EUDAT? See next slide Joint training modules with RIs E.g. e-infras. Module for Digital Humanities ERASMUS+ project in DARIAH Lightweight certification of trainees and trainers? E.g. Mozilla Open Badges?

10 EGI-EUDAT training topics
Identify scenarios that ‘make sense’ for joint EGI-EUDAT use. E.g. Data stage-in from EUDAT storage to EGI for processing To EGI HTC platform (SRM?) To EGI Federated Cloud (CDMI/native?) Data submission from EGI to an EUDAT archive From EGI HTC platform (SRM?) From EGI Federated Cloud (CDMI/native?) Linking metadata from EUDAT service to data residing in EGI Develop ‘Cookbooks’ for each of these? An already existing cookbook (from 2012): Deliver f2f trainings based on these? Integrate these into RI training curricula?
