What is Nurse Leader Rounding? Nursing Leaders rounding on patients and caregivers. Actionable information collected highlights successes and identifies opportunities for improvement. Objective is to build rapport and form relationships. (Baker, 2010).

Why is Nurse Leader Rounding important? Called “evidenced based practice” related to positive patient satisfaction. Shown to be an effective strategy to increase hospital rating scores. Positive perceptions of effective nursing quality care delivered. (Morton, Brekhus, Reynolds & Dykes, 2014).

Goals Support and improve patient care. Increase caregiver engagement. Improve patient and employee experience. Recognize caregivers. (“Effective Nurse Leader Rounding,” 2016).

Benefits Increases staff engagement. Builds trust with front-line caregivers. Identifies challenges encountered in daily operations. Promotes a healthy work environment. (Death, 2016).

How does it work? Registration Presentation Rounding Debrief Receive team assignment Presentation Reward a caregiver Rounding With assigned team Debrief Sharing stories and rounding findings (Cleveland Clinic, 2017).

Key components Determine scope Who should round? How often? What time? Day shift or Night shift? Where to meet? Central location? Which departments? Create toolkit to support implementation and maintain consistency. (Morton, Brekhus, Reynolds & Dykes, 2014).

Recipe for Success Purposeful Leader Rounding Behaviors Display empathy and active listening Visibility Shows leader commitment to transparency Feedback Ask questions specific to overall care and patient experience Frequency Rounding at consistent intervals Recognition Reward front line caregivers (Morton, Brekhus, Reynolds & Dykes, 2014).

Implications for Practice Consistency is key – frequency of rounding is imperative for success. Leadership presence is necessary to drive the initiative. Strong leader engagement is vital to clearly communicate expectations of the role. (Morton, Brekhus, Reynolds & Dykes, 2014).

Implications for Practice Inclusion of all leaders, not limited to nursing could be beneficial. Real time feedback received allows for on the spot correction. Environment of trust and transparency created by visibility of senior leadership. (Winter & Tijong, 2015).
