FOIL, PROTAGONIST, ANTAGONIST, HERO

PROTAGONIST The protagonist is the main character in a story, novel, drama, or other literary work, the character that the reader or audience empathizes with

ANTAGONIST The antagonist opposes the protagonist. In the most archetypical narratives, this boils down to bad guy vs. good guy: Luke Skywalker versus Darth Vadar in the first Star Wars movie, for instance

HERO A hero is usually recognized in a work of literature as someone with great courage and strength (although that's not always the case). The hero may risk or sacrifice his or her life for the greater good.

FOIL A foil is a character who serves as a contrast to another perhaps more primary character, so as to point out specific traits of the primary character A foil usually either differs drastically or is extremely similar but with a key difference setting them apart

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FOIL AND ANTAGONIST An antagonist is the person, or thing acting against the protagonist, or hero. It does not have to be the same species as the protagonist, or even alive at all. The foil always is. The foil, is a character who has contrasting/complementary characteristics to the protagonist The foil can be the antagonist, or a side kick, or anywhere in between

CONFLICT Without conflict, there is no plot Introduced in rising action Faced head on in rising action Begins to work itself out in falling action Is generally resolved in resolution

External Conflict is between a character and an outside force Man vs. man Man vs. Nature Man vs. Society

MAN VS. MAN A character struggles with another character Protagonist vs. Antagonist Good guy vs. bad guy Examples??

MAN VS. TECHNOLOGY Man fights against computers, machines, media, etc. Examples?
