Bombardier Masters Scholarships Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS “MA SSHRC” Seeks to develop research skills and assist in training of Highly Qualified Personnel by supporting students in the Social Sciences and Humanities who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergrad and early grad studies.

Application Process Become familiar with the Website Are you eligible? Information and Instructions Complete application form Submit form and attachments to RO for internal adjudication on January 4th RO sends nominations to SSHRC for February 2nd

A complete application consists of: the online application form, completed, printed and signed the program of study (max. 2 pages) a bibliography/citations (max. 5 pages) a research contributions page (if applicable, max. 1 page) official letter to confirm part-time study and/or leave of absence (if applicable, max. 1 page) all undergraduate and graduate level transcripts two (2) completed Letters of Appraisal in sealed envelopes the Departmental Appraisal (only for candidates who must apply through a Canadian university) the Application Checklist Acknowledgement of Receipt of Applications SSHRC will acknowledge receipt of your printed and signed application form and will assign you an application number. Please cite this number in all correspondence.

Eligibility Canadian citizenship Applying to support your first full-time graduate degree Have achieved 1st class average in each of last 2 years of study Have not already received an award for master’s level study from tri-council agency Not pursuing a degree that combines undergrad and graduate degrees If indicating interest for business-related research, have broad focus So “Eligibility and Guidelines”… this is where reading the find print comes in handy!! Because lets be honest, as upper year students, there’s no time to waste.

Evaluation and Adjudication Academic Excellence: 60% Transcripts, Awards, Distinctions Research Potential: 30% Quality of analytical skills, critical thinking, originality, initiative, research contributions, letters of appraisal Communication Skills: 10% As demonstrated in the description of the degree program, by work experience, community involvement and extracurricular activities.

Tips for Writing the Grant Find a Faculty member to mentor you through this process (your thesis supervisor for example). Write the grant in draft form first Start Early & Edit Often

A Good Application Answers the Questions What is your research question? Why is this idea worth doing? Why are you the person to do it?

Things to remember You do not need to confirm enrollment at Grad School at time of application. Do not forget to sign and date your form. Watch your page limits. Feedback will not be offered from the STU Internal Adjudication Committee. It must be obtained from your mentor before submitting your application. When SSHRC announces the results in the Spring, they’ll contact you first (in writing) and then our office. SSHRC will not release results via email or phone. We do not receive advance notice of the results, but we welcome your questions or concerns. Once you have received an Bombardier MA SSHRC you are then eligible for a Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement, if you are interested in a research experience outside of Canada.
