2 Welcome Back! Housekeeping issues Important Dates Things you should know…

3 Class Representatives We need to elect two academic Class Reps We require names, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers for each elected Class Rep. Class Professors have documentation for the elected Reps.

4 What does your Academic Class Representative do? Acts as your primary contact to the ECE department Represents you at the monthly Class Prof-Class Rep meetings Relays all of your feedback (positive/negative) to the appropriate person. Closes the information loop – communicates information from you to the department and from the department to you Ensures that course critiques and TA evaluations are completed, collected and delivered appropriately. Announces upcoming events, seminars, etc.

5 Class Prof – Class Rep Meetings The meetings will be held from 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm in EIT 3142 on the following days: Thursday, January 18 Thursday, February 8 Thursday, March 1 Thursday, March 22

6 Changes to the Class Prof hour We are trying to provide better communication and we will utilize the Class Prof hour to exchange important and useful information. All students should try to attend Upcoming schedule: New ECE Website and Forms tour – Jan. 23 rd – RCH 307 TOWN HALL MEETING – Jan.30 th – RCH 301 TE Information – Feb. 6 th, Feb 27 th & Mar. 13 th – MC 4021 Industry Expectations & Career Services – Mar. 6 th – RCH 302 Grad School – Mar. 20 th – RCH 301 See the ECE Undergrad Website for the complete schedule. 7 You are invited: All ECE and SE students are invited to attend the ECE Town Hall Meeting The ECE Chair provides students with an update on the ECE Department You will have an opportunity to ask questions, offer suggestions or request changes The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 30 @ 11:30am in RCH 301

8 Work Term Reports – Part I Work term reports are due tomorrow, January 10 th at the ECE main office by 4:30 p.m. The ECE main office will remain open during the lunch hour in order to accommodate your handing in work reports.

9 Work Term Reports – Part II Common errors: Report must be bound You can bind your report at the EngSoc office for a nominal fee Sign the Letter of Submittal Address it to: Prof. Catherine Rosenberg Remember to enter your WTR title on https://ecewo.uwaterloo.ca/ https://ecewo.uwaterloo.ca/ You ONLY need a title page if the front cover is opaque

10 Work Term Reports – Part III Want to see what an OUTSTANDING report looks like? Samples are online at: www.engsoc.uwaterloo.ca www.engsoc.uwaterloo.ca Outstanding work reports are eligible for an award Late reports will be graded in Spring 2007 Failure to submit a report on time results in a failure (38) appearing on your transcript

11 Upper-Year Scholarships An upper year scholarship (UYS) is given to the number one ranked student in each cohort (no application process) The $400 award is given by the Dean’s office The UYS can only be paid while student is on academic term If you have any questions, please contact Sue Nelson in the Office of the Dean of Engineering, CPH 4301, extension 32718

12 Undergraduate Research Assistantships Opportunity to participate in engineering research You work 6 hours per week under the supervision of an ECE faculty member Payment is $600 per term Students with an 80%+ average should consider applying (student arranges the project directly with the Professor) Applications are available from the receptionist in the Dean’s Office (CPH 4301) Applications are due by Friday January 12 th Other awards will be posted on the bulletin board outside of the ECE Main Office (3 rd floor of EIT)

13 Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) Must have 80%+ average Student is responsible for arranging for a suitable faculty member to sponsor them (may be from another university) Requires you to work full-time (non-academic term) Award is valued at $6,000.00 Download application Form 202 from the NSERC website Application deadline is February 12 for Spring 2007 applications ECE contact is Maureen Stafford, U/G Advisor/Coordinator

14 Sandford Fleming Foundation The Sanford Fleming Foundation will once again hold a technical speaker competition, which will be held on Thursday, February 8 th at 11:00 a.m. in DWE 2534. Any questions about the competition should be addressed to Professor J. Craig at ext. 37554. The Sandford Fleming Departmental Program Competition runs from January 2 nd to February 2 nd. For more information, see Professor Davison or go to: http://www.eng.uwaterloo.ca/~sff Prizes will be awarded for the best presentations within each department and the best presentation within the entire faculty
