Test Taking Skills for 6th Graders Miss Harrison’s Class

Go into a test with a positive attitude! Be Positive Go into a test with a positive attitude! Having a positive attitude will enhance your outlook on tests and make you more prepared for test.

Organize Have a nice clean and cleared desk. Have all of your required material out on your desk ready to go. Organize your thoughts about the test. Know that when taking a test, organizing your plan on how to approach the test will help!

Read the Questions First! Before starting to read the story, paragraph, or even a graph, read the questions first! By reading the questions first it will help you identify and highlight specific things you might need to know in order to answer the questions for the test.

Lets review!

Highlight and Underline Highlight and underline things inside of the story or paragraph that you think are important. Italicized words, descriptive words, plot, setting, character traits…ect. Make sure to go back and check with the questions that you have previously read.

Reread If you don’t know an answer please go back and reread. Do not guess. Please remember that all answers are in the text. Take a few minutes out to go back and reread!

Lets Review

Paragraph by paragraph should be read thoroughly. Look Back at Questions While you are rereading, look back at the questions, especially if you think it is a question you will need to know! Paragraph by paragraph should be read thoroughly. After reading each paragraph take a few minutes out to go back and look at the questions, just in case you missed something you might need to know!

Process of Elimination While you are answering questions, use process of elimination. This is where you would eliminate two possible answers. These answers should be eliminated because they either have no relevance on the story or can not possibly be answers. Before you eliminate these answers look back into the story to double check!

Lets Review!

Think of everything you have read and learned about the topic. Educated Guess After you have done process of elimination it is time to make an educated guess. With the two remaining answers you should look back into the story and reread the question. Think of everything you have read and learned about the topic. Make an educated pick based on facts from the story, hints the author has given you, and even previous knowledge.

Look Back and Review When you THINK you are done, always go back and review. Check to make sure that you have answered all of the questions Make sure that you are confident in your answers If you have an extended response, reread to look for capitalization or grammatical mistakes Take your time!

One Last Thing……..

I know that all of you will do your very BEST!!!! Good Luck!!! I know that all of you will do your very BEST!!!!
